My 9 year old son was just diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Athritis.  He was seen at the Shriners Hospital in Springfield Mass yesterday.  Just from examining him she said he had it in his left knee (very swollen) his right ring finger, his right wrist, and his right anke (very swollen) I didn't even notice that his ankle was swollen till she pointed it out same with is finger and wrist.  

We brought him to an ortho dr cause his knee had been swollen for several weeks.  but the ortho guy found nothing wrong as far as trauma.  So we were sent to the Shriners.

She took x-rays and blood work yesterday and I should know more tomorrow. 

I am a bit overwhelmed right now and not sure how to react.....

I am very sorry to hear about your son.  I agree with SnowyLynne find out as much as you can about RA.

I am new to this too,but am 33 year old mother of 2 sons.  I would not wish this on ANYbody, especially children.

Keep checkin into HealingWell there's lots of good people that will listen and offer any advice they can.  If nothing else its a good place to chat with people who understand what your son and your family are going thru.  Best of luck. ((gentle hugs)) smurf

Sorry to hear about your son. It sounds like they have caught things early though and with the correct meds he has a very good chance of going into remission. Read what you can and ask for advice. RA can be a very scary disease for everyone involved but the hospital should be able to put together a rheumatology team for him: this can include any specialists he needs to see like a physiotherapist, occupational therapist, counsellor, othotist etc. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

Hey Sheryl.. so sorry to hear about your son! But you are doing the best thing for him now.. Early detection is key.. kids always go through things so much better than us adults! :) how is he feeling? Let us know what you hear today.. good luck to you and your son

Just an update....I talked to the Dr yesterday.  She said that the blood test results that she has gotten back so far look ok.  No liver problems and he is not anemic.  She does not have all the results back yet.  The x-rays  from what she can tell show NO joint damage.  So good news so far.

We have an appointment on the 26th of Nov.  and she should have all the results of everything back.  She said she would decide what medications he will be on by then.
