HELP!! MTX and SAT's

My daughter has had JRA for the past 7 years and has been told today that she needs to start MTX. OK-read all the scary stuff, but here is the question....She WANTS to start it tomorrow because she wants to start feeling better. But, she has to take her SAT's the very next day. Should she take it or wait???? (took one dose of folic acid today)

I would definitely suggest that your daughter wait until after the SAT's to begin the MTX. If she's never taken it, you have no idea how she'll react. I'm not trying to scare you or her, but I wouldn't risk blowing the exams.

I'm using Enbrel and just now added MTX after having been off it for two years. The day after I take it I have a headache and feel tired and slightly nauseated. Some people have no reactions and some have severe nausea and/or vomiting that lasts for a couple of days.

Thanks. That's what I felt too. The difficult part of that decision is having to wait a week before starting. (Her easiest day to sleep in is usually Saturday) Should we continue the folic acid for this entire week prior to the first dose next week?

Did her rheumatologist recommend a specific dose of folic acid for your daughter, prescription or OTC? Different doctors have different ideas as to how much and when to take it. I'd give the rheumy (or his nurse) a call.

I'm glad your daughter is waiting another week. Hopefully she'll have no problems with taking MTX.

The folic acid Rx is 1 mg per day except on the day she takes the MTX.
BTW, thanks. It's hard to know what to do when everyone seems to have such a varied response to the meds.
I am also a bit surprised to hear about other people's dosages. My daughter is almost 17 and he has her starting on 15 mg of MTX. A lot of the other folks seem to start out with less. She has never taken anything else except Naprosyn for the past 3 months. She has had her knees drained and injected MULTIPLE times but no "big time" meds until now. And, I have to admit that I am scared for her.

I have been on methotrexate for 12 months. I saw a 70% relief in only 4 months but then it stopped. Every now and then I will feel another improvement and then it stops again. how long will this go on?
