My Mom- RA & breast cancer

I'm usually in the UC forum but my mom has RA. She was diagnosed with breast cancer a couple of months ago. It was caught early and she is in treatment right now. The problem is she was on Remicade to treat her RA and she cannot be on it right now because of her cancer treatment. So needless to say she is having a hard time with the RA. Her dr. put her on prednisone but it really isn't helping much.

I was just wondering if anyone here has had a similar situation and is there anything she can do right now to help ease her stiffness and pain. Thanks so much in advance!

Im sooo sorry to hear about your Mother, I hope the treatment she is having makes her cancer-free. Im not sure if you have been on the Breast Cancer forum - if not - they are a lovely bunch who are compassionate with lots of experience to share, so, dont hesitate to go their for advice.

In regards to her RA pain, I would try heatpads and hot showers if she is able - I do this before I get to see the Rheumy to adjust my meds and it eases the stiffness and pain somewhat.

Please keep us posted on how your Mother is doing.

My mo was just dx with breast cancer in October. It is a difficult road and i am so sorry to hear about your mom. If you are like me i was just dumb founded.
Anyways she has lupus and has FM as well. She has been in treatment for both at the same time. She had to go to the oncologist and ask them i am sure you could contact their office and they could help you with what meds that she can take at the same time. This is what we had to do with my mom.She had to have a double mastectomy and then chemo. Mine is on chemo for the next 5 years but doing better. I hope everything turns out ok. Hi Marianne,

I also have RA and breast cancer. I went off methotrexate and Humira in preparation for starting chemotherapy. I've been fortunate that chemo has taken care of most of my joint pain. I told my oncologist and my rheumatologist that we had six weeks to start chemo before I started to flare and they got it done.

I have noticed, however, that I have to pay a bit closer attention to the food triggers for my RA. I could sneak a bit before and now they're out of the question (so long, fried food!) On the other hand, I can have alcohol (hello, red wine!)

I don't have much more to offer, unfortunately, other than maintaining a strong dialogue between your rheumatologist and oncologist.
