So I've had pain in my back, now for the past few weeks, I've noticed the stiffness in my back. It is so tight, almost like a vice grip around my lower back/tailbone/spine area, and it lasts the entire day. I'm back on the Enbrel and I also take the MTX. Does anyone else have this issue or know what it is from? or even better how to make it go away?

I have DDD in my lower back and if I try to vacuum, or bend over doing anything for longer than just am minute, my back "locks up". Sounds as though your muscles have cramped up. When that happens to me, I see my ortho who prescribes Soma, a muscle relaxant. I usually have to take it around the clock for three or four days, and it finally loosens up. Many of us have OA in addition to RA. Funny thing, though, when they x-rayed my back the last time, the doctor pointed out this white haze around the left side of my spine. She said it was inflammation, and you don't usually see inflammation like that on a simple X-ray. Hope this helps!

Hi Mom, the only thing that helps mine is prednisone, now I a finally off the pred, I just have a sore back all the time. I try to keep up my core strength exercises in the pool and that has helped strengthen my stomach muscles which does help. My osteo says its just inflammation and nothing he can adjust but you could try a good osteopath or chiro and see if you're in alignment? Physios help with exercises too, don't forget your fish oil to help with inflammation.

Maybe go in and get an mri of your spine to make sure there is no damage there and then see what you can do. I wish I could tell you it would go away, but I can say it's better on some days than others at least for me.

I have OA from Degenerative disk and facet disease. I feel like a knife goes into my back when I bend over.

Please get that MRI and get it some help.

Heat also relaxes the muscles for me.

Thanks everyone! Yep, I'm afraid I'm headed back to the doctor and most likely a look see (MRI or X-Ray) to see what is going on, if it isn't one thing it is another, righ? Thanks so much for the well wishes and advice!

I know, I just groan if my doctor says another test. I am so tested out!!! I just want to be NORMAL every now and again.

Hi ladies-gents too I guess. I'm new here-but not new to RA. When I first got diagnosed 10 yrs ago at 42 I thought my life was over. I did a holistic approach for a year-nutrition and body work but was still fatigued and barely able to move most of the time. Tried methotrexate and some other things to no avail-except the wonderful horrible steroids which worked wonders but had horrible side effects. I finally started Enbrel and it was incredible. I believe I went into remission. The nurse form the drug company who called to check in on me suggested I do yoga and I laughed-right, I could barely get up and down the steps! Well I did try it because a friend was opening a studio as a new teacher. 8 yrs later I'm a certified yoga teacher myself and off the Enbrel. I had too many illnesses and also went off dairy and gluten which seemed to help immensely. I appreciate the help the Enbrel gave me at the time-I have found the full holistic approach has served me well in the longer run. I am on here now to deal with new drug reactions to anti depressant change since I went off Cymbalta. Best to you all.
