Hi guys

I would appreciate your help once again.  I have been treating an ulcer on my brothers feet for a few months now.  An ant bit him about two years ago and it took a while but we got it heal  unfortunately in November of this year it broke out again I decided to do the same treatment and again I was seeing progress it was almost closed up, but for some reason it broke out again and now the process starts all over again.  kindly let me know if anyone here with RA has had issues with Ulcers on their feet and how they got them healed up.  His own is the size of a quarter  a 2x2 gauge can cover it with a lot of space.  I was using provodine iodine on it but that burns so much he was not able to tolerate it.  I started using this ointment named terrasil wound care ointment it does not burn as much but it increase the amount of stuff coming out of the wound it is not as dry as iodine and is not so taxing to take off.  Please any information you guys can give me I would really appreciate.  Ohhh he has a wound care nurse that has been working with us.  I am skeptical to use the unna boot again because the last time it cut between his Instep and the joint way down to his tending.  I am eagerly awaiting your response.

Hi Reezi & welcome to Healing Well. I cannot answer your question about RA & the ulcer. I have not heard of this happening with RA. What does his specialist say? You mentioned a wound care nurse being involved, has he seen an infectious disease dr? If not, I certainly would push for a referral to one. Finding out the what the bacteria is & treating it appropriately is crucial. Is your brother by chance diabetic?

hi straydog,

along with his arthritis he has venous insufficiency so his circulation is very bad. it takes his a long time to heal his wounds so we try our best to keep him from getting injuries. I guess as the wound care nurse said it is a slow process with venous insufficiency.

Reezi, I understand the situation better now knowing what is causing the ulcers. My husband has venous insufficiency too from blood clots in his leg. I am assuming the drs are doing ultrasounds ever so often to check this. My husband recently had an ablation to the main vein in his lower leg with hopes of getting better blood flow in his leg. The reason for the procedure, getting too many ulcers on the leg & it more often than not takes a year for one to heal.

Work with the wound care nurse, ask questions about her trying different remedies for the wound healing. I would not use anything on this without the dr approving it. While you are trying to help there is a potential of you making it worse.

thank you straydog I ended up taking him to a specialist and he checked for diabetes also and he was not diabetic. he is now treating him. he had an appointment yesterday after he had placed him on antibiotics and has said he wound is healing and it is a 100% better than how it was when we came. he changes the bandage once a week. Thank you for all the information will keep you updated

My brothers bandage was changed yesterday and and it very much on its way to healing thank you so kindly for all the information. Hope your husband is doing much better and he has no further ulcers

Reezi, so very glad to read your brothers wound is healing nicely. So far his leg continues to be healed for the moment. He should be having an ultrasound soon to see if the vein procedure worked or not.
