hi arthritis experts,

I've posted a couple of questions here before. you guys are always so helpful. (i'm usually on the lupus forum).

Todays question is: in osteoarthritis are the inflamation markers in bloodwork elevated? I know I have arthritis in my thumbs and wrists. pretty sure its getting going in the knees and hips and maybe ankles/feet.

And i hope all of you start feeling better (I've been peeking at good moanin'--it's a wonderful way you guys keep up with and support each other.)

To my knowledge, there is no blood test that aids in the diagnosis of osteoarthritis. Initially, blood tests are done to EXCLUDE other causes of joint pain such as rheumatoid arthritis. Xray is useful in diagnosing OA.

If you have a lot of inflammed joints it might be rheumatoid arthritis.  Did you have a blood test for that?   I would definitely go to a rheumatologist & not an internist or general practitioner.

I have symetrical joint involvement, swollen joints, but no raised inflamation markers. I do have connective tissue disease (overlapping lupus and scleroderma with hashimoto's thyroid disease). I see my rheumie next week and plan on on asking her to order xrays of my hands and wrists as they seem to be the worst. She seems to be stuck on RA altho she hasn't checked for RA factor in 2 yrs.; not too concerned with treating OA.

Hi there.......I don't believe all types of arthritis have enough inflamation to raise ESR or CPR rates. I have RA with a negative RF (rheumatoid factor) what is high and is a confirming diagnostic marker of RA is the Anti Cyclic Citrullinated Peptide test. This is a measurement of a protien that your body produces if you are producing antibodies against the inflamation in specifically Rheumatoid Arthritis. It has a high specificity for confirming disease
