I have been posting here for a bit, and lately I have been having a terrible flare sad lots of pain and swelling in hands and fingers and last night I discovered a  nodule on one of my knuckles.  The thing is my RF testing is always negative and I have always heard about these nodules and now I have one.  How common is it to have these and do they go away or just get bigger?? I have very small hands and fingers and my knuckles are becoming large and mishapen and now I am worried about the nodule I found.

I take plaquenil but it doesn't seem to be working, especially if I am getting nodules now? Any advice on these would be great :-)

Hi momto3. I am new here but also found my first nodule on my achilles tendon right behind my ankle 2 days ago and am sero-negative as well. Soooo though I have no answer for you I am very interested in the answers that you receive.

I had no luck with MTX, and grew the nodule while on it, so Dr added Enbrel last week.

hi mom23 i missed u.... sry to hear u are stillnot doing well and now the nodules. i really am not certain but i think if it is a true nodule it is there but if it is just alot of inflammation around the synovium then i think it can go down again..... but i am not 100% certain. i really just wanted to say hi again and glad u posted keep intouch and hopefully someone will be around who knows for certtain..... yalinda oh the typing is bad as the fingers are stiff!

Osteoarthritis can cause the formation of nodules on the knuckles of the fingers and thumb. I have nodules on EVERY knuckle, some so large that I can no longer bend the joint. Every doctor that sees my hands sayd I must have RA but my RA factor is always negative and the xrays always confirm osteoarthritis, not RA.

 My last appointment with my rhuemy was the day after Christmas and I was supposed to make an appointment for 4 weeks later, and I didn't, just forgot to, but then I had high hopes for the plaquenil, and if it wasn't doing better  after the four weeks, I would be given something else, but was warned those have more serious side affects eyes Scary!!! But then at this point, it even hurts to breath, and my husband told me I am having a really bad flare because I feel hot to the touch.  I think it is time to go back to the doctor.

Are you okay, just a bit stiff? not trying to minimize the stiffness, but you know what I mean :-)   I hope! It's so frustrating when your fingers don't work like they are supposed to..grrr! I'm happy to hear from you!

Hi Bonny,

It seems there are many of us that are negative, but at least we are able to get treatment :-) It is a long and frustrating road, that I have found.  Good luck with the Enbrel, I hope it will be the one that works for you!!! I know that with each med, we are always so hopeful it will be the one!

By the way I  am in Colorado, not far from the Wyoming boarder, are you tired of the snow yet? :-)

Hi mom-to-5 it sure is a small world!  I am totally tired or the snow, cold, and wind.

Do you see a Dr in Ft. Collins?  I went to Dr Thakor last August but have found a great team here thank God cause driving an hour is hard and I-25 has been closed a lot.

I also hope that you start feeling better soon.

Hi Bonnie,

Yes I see Dr. Thakor :-)  Yes, it is a small world! I have been seeing him for the past year, after my pcp provider didn't know what to do for me, I was sent to Dr.Thakor and thankfully even with a negative test result he still treats me.  I have heard that some doctors will not, unless you are positive.  Although, at this point he is getting concerned since the plaquenil is not doing what we had hoped, and he is now wanting to try more serious medications.

I'm glad you have found a good doctor as well!  The drive on I-25 is not fun, I live about 40 minutes from Fort Collins, and my children go to school there, so we are daily commuters.

Hopefully, we will have better weather soon! I am so ready for spring/summer :-)
