Has anyone been on Prilosec for long term? My Rheumy is having me take 20mg. 2x/day. I have real problem with any anti inflammatory or pain drugs upsetting my stomach. The Prednisone I am taking hasn't bothered my stomach at all. I think it works really well and it allows me to eat anything that I want without upset. I was on it when I took 2 treatments for Hpylori.

I have been on Prevacid and now Nexium non-stop for a few years. Prevacid gives me headaches now - only since I've been on Nexium, I don't recall getting them when I was on it. Unless some of my current issues have to do with these PPIs (which I think Prilosec is), I don't think there has been any issues with being on them long-term.

I was on something like that but then we changed to nexium pretty much the same I buess. I have been on that kind of drug for a few years. I have acid reflux and also a hiadial herina. It does work but I still can't eat before going to bed. Good luck.

I have been on PPIs for the past 4.5 years.  Specifically, I take aciphex, but all of the drugs in that class (nexium, prilosec, prevacid, and I'm sure several others) are pretty much the same.  Although any drug, if taken long-term, has its fair share of risk, I don't believe the risk of complications from taking PPIs is very high.  At least I hope not.  I can't do without a PPI; I have an esophagael dysmotility disorder that cannot be fixed (I don't think) and have been told I will be on PPIs for life.  On a positive note, PPIs have greatly increased my quality of life.  Before aciphex, I could hardly eat.

There is some concern about risk of stomach inflammation and atrophy of the stomach lining associated with prolonged use of Prilosec. But it looks like there is no proven data that says there were serious problems with long term use of Prilosec so far.
