dental question

Hi All,

Do any of you know if we need to take any antibiotics or anything before a dental visit while on Methotrexate?  I haven't heard that we do.

Yeah, check-up, cleaning and I broke a tooth.

My son has a congenital heart defect so needs to be pre-medicated with antibiotics. I didn't know if immune suppressed also needed this kind of protection.

Thanks. I guess that's the safest bet - of course my Rheumy appt is the day after the dentist so I'll have to call.

Hey Mary, did you talk to the dentist? I have never had to have any type of meds prior to my dental visits (cleanings/x-rays) But I've never had any type of dental surgery since I have been on the biologics either.. Have you had your appts yet?

Hi! I am a dental hygienist and my husband is an oral surgeon; there is no need to pre-medicate for routine dental work for mtx. I have been on mtx for over 12 years. I have had several surgeries over the past several years for different things, and each time I was told to stop the mtx for 2 weeks prior to surgery because it can interfere with healing. Depending on the invasive nature of the procedure, that might pertain to oral surgery as well. Your dentist should check with your rheumatologist if you are having dental surgery. BTW, the American Heart Association has recently changed the recommendation for pre-medication regarding dental treatment for heart murmurs. etc. Most people no longer require pre-medication unless there has been a heart valve replacement or a known history of a previous endocarditis. Check with your PCP or cardiologist if you still require pre-med with antibiotics for dental treatment if you have a heart murmur or MVP. FK
