I have extreem foot pain need advice on shoes

While I have not had this problem, I just bought a pair of Keen water sandles, though I am not much of a water guy. They are very comfy, wide toe box, and cradle the foot well. You might want to give them a try. Go to a good shoe store and ask about Keens.
And as an added benefit, you can dunk your feet (shoes and all) into every cool stream you come across :)

I've even been told by a young gal that I don't look too much like an old man if I wear them with socks, as long as they are not white socks. Craig, you absolutely crack me up! Those socks are awesome, I HAVE to have a pair now! Do they make them in Slipper-sock format??? I wonder.... 

Scott - I have severe problems with my feet caused by growing up with JRA in my knees. Now the psoriatic arthritis along with morton's nueroma (sp?) cause me a lot of grief. The podietrist recommended New Balance sneakers for me as I cannot wear anything w/o a lot of support. (Sadly, I have attended many-a-weddings and was IN a wedding wearing these lovely sneaks with my dresses!  I was comfy at least thought laughable. )  I also recommend seeing a podietrist and possibly getting proper support inserts as I am living proof that years of walking incorrectly to counteract pain elsewhere can really screw up one's feet!

welcome to Healing Well!!! in regards to your footwear, i would consider being fitted for a pair of orthotics by a shoe shoppe! they contour them to best align your spine and joints. the shoes are sometimes not so attractive...but they will feel like heaven, especially if you have walking and standing to do. you can look in your yellow pages or telie directory for "shoes" or "orthotics" or maybe even under footwear. a proper fit is very important for you since you have AS!! it will help immensely to keep yourself better aligned and may help prevent AS spasms. i too have AS and RA.
i wish you the best!! do shoe inserts or insoles help you any?? i know they have new high tech gel inserts and stuff.

I agree. New Balance - wide toe box, great arch support, come in a variety of widths.

Try both shoes on and walk around, if you think you will need to "break them in" choose something else.
