Arava or Avara ???

Hello,

Saw my rheumy today.  Not much change other than my labs are showing even more inflammation the before.  He increased my dose of MTX to 20mg but I will be giving by injection.  He asked me if I was taking folic acid.  I guess I was supposed to but did not realize this.  I also had carpal tunnel surgery Tuesday and I'm not too sure what they put in the IV sedation but I've been a little loopy for two days. 

 

My rheumy is going to add Arava(spl) if things don't improve by my next visit which is Dec 27th.  Is anybody taking this and if so what can  I expect ie; side effects.

Hi Raven,

Hope you are feeling better...don't imagine carpal tunnel surgery is alot of fun, you poor thing. I'm loopy and I don't even have an IV to blame it on lol!  Do you have help with the kids while your recuperating?

Don't know too much about the Arava, or however you spell it, but I think CaMama takes that.  I'm sure she'll come on when she can to share her experiences.  Not too sure, but I think it's similar to mtx??  Sorry they never told you about the folic acid, I got a script for that right away, but I haven't been too faithful about taking it, got to get back on the ball.

I take it and have little side effects. The only side effect that I am aware of is stomach problems after I eat most of the time. Other than that - that's about it. I am not even sure if it helps with anything else - but today my doctor said she is afraid of taking me off of it at this time since I am HORRIBLE pain and have so much inflamation. I really hope it helps you.

I have taken Arava in combination with Methotrexate and Rituxan for several months now.  I must say that the Arava was a very good addition and I would be afraid to lose it.  Right now I think I can safely say my RA is in remission.  Stiff in the AM and sore for no more than 10 minutes.... evenings aren't bad at all.  I am very pleased with this drug and can't say that I go any side effects from it at all not even in the beginning.  They start you off at half dose for a few days before taking the full dose.
