Hi Everyone, i was diagnosed with Sacroilitis through an x-ray, i also have other auto immune related problems, 33 yrs old male. I have endured severe pain to the point where i just could not walk, and the only way i could move across the room was army style commando crawl with my elbows. My rheumy offered me TNF blockers, and i rejected them as i was sure there had to be another way. Anyway after six months of intense research and trial and error i have been able to manage the pain effectively. Here is what i did:
1a. Stretches: Yoga pose - feet up the wall (this was impossible when i first started but after 2 weeks i could do it fine) this stretch is so beneficial, sometimes i do it 10 x a day.
1b. Muscle release
- whilst standing lift both buttocks up and hold for 3min
- whilst standing get your thumbs and press and push in towards spine (dont press down, but in) on the muscles of the lower back and hold it for 3min
-with your fingers press gently in on your abdomen muscles toward the centre of your of your six pack :)
2. Don't sit: avoid sitting as much as possible and when you do sit make sure its on a soft couch, don't sit on anything hard, a wooden bench will put me out of action for 4 days. If you work on a computer, get a standing desk and train yourself to stand for long amounts of time (annoying but worth it) Also, only sleep on your side, sleeping on your back or tummy can make things worse. And try avoid lifting or stooping forward as much as possible.
3. supplements and diet
- quit : sugar, wheat, dairy, fruit, preservatives, caffeine, alcohol
- take 1 Curcumin a day (extract of tumeric) the one i use is life expectancy super bio curcumin with bcm95
-drink nettle tea from dried leaves, let it brew for min. 6min (make sure you drink lots of water before and after, as this is a diuretic)
I also do feldenkrais one on one, just to release the glutes. Different movements can re-tigger the muscle tightening, you have to learn the patterns and positions to know what is safe and what is not.
There's very little info. on how to live with this condition, I hope this helps someone out there.
Good Luck my SIJ friends

UPDATE 1/12/2015 - I have been meaning to update this post for so long. But about
6 months ago i discovered that starch was the main trigger for my sacroilitis and psoriasis. I have cut out 90% of starch from my diet (my diet is probably some version of paleo) and my sacro pain has been massively reduced, and my psoriasis has vanished. I learnt this by reading an article from Professor Alan Ebringer. So i actually don't follow the above list anymore, the main thing that i have to avoid besides 'starch' is sitting on anything hard, like a wooden bench. Another thing i do is sleep on my side with a pillow in between my legs. Hope this helps guys.
