My husband has gout. This is his web site. (At times, I will write for him. Usually, he will write.)
Please advise on diet: What to avoid and the best foods to eat. My husband is overweight and is slowly losing weight. He drank numerous cokes, Dr. Pepper, Rootbeer, sweet tea daily. He has changed in the last two weeks and drank a lot of water. Then, He drank a lot (40 oz) of tea and a hugh muffalotta sandwich Friday PM and woke up Sat AM with more intense pain in left big toe.
First occurance of gout was this month. Hurricane Gustav and Ike caused a great deal of stress for us--preventatives and preparations to prepare for their devastation was somewhat overwhelming. My husband thought he broke his big toe somehow in all the preparations---so he did not go to the doctor for the first two weeks. His Chiropractor told him it was probably Gout.
Doctor (Phy Assistant) gave Etodolac ER 400 mg (generic for LODINE XL)---1 tablet twice a day as needed for pain. She took blood to verify gout.
My concern: I assume the Phy. Ast. only gave him pain medicine until the blood test results return. After on-line reading, I'm concerned that the blood test isn't as accurate as something else.
Please help and comment. We would like to accurately handle this problem.
