about a year ago I was told I have RA after my knee swelled up really big and they did blood work. I only know how RA is caused and it makes my knee sweel and sometimes hurt espically when I play volleyball. After about a year I figured out that my knee sweels a little bit when ever I have my periods but not as much as the first time it sweeled. I would just like to know some more information about this and what other things can happen besides the swelling

you came to the right place. many people here are very helpful and understanding. When I was told I had RA, I went online and researched RA. Hang in there, someone will reply to your post and give you some places to go to help answer you questions.

I never heard of getting an RA DX from swelling in 1 joint only. RA typically starts in the small joints like the hands and feet and is symmetrical. Not that any of us are cookie cutter cases. Some people have a positive RF blood reading for no real reason. Was it very high?
I'm no doctor but it kind of sounds like a knee injury to me.
Did they put you on any meds? Was it a rheumatologist that made this dx? I would get it checked out a little more thoroughly. I wish you all the best.

Well I'm really small for my size and it swelled up really big like the size of a grapefruit. I went to school that day ad didn't notice it until around 10am they did do a cat scan and MRI and X-ray and nothing showed up but the fluid around it. They did do bloodwork and it showed up slightly that I did have RA. And no the doctor did not give me any meds. The dr the or that dx me is a ped. Rhumatologist in Vanderbil. Now the tip of my feet are hurting really bad and it's been like this for about a week now. My aunt was dx with RA when she was 3. Thanks:)

I have heard of RA being diagnosed in random joints first versus smaller joints such as hands or feet. But then again, the disease could have started in your hands and feet without you noticing. Just depends on you & how your body handles the RA. What helps me is using my TENS unit around the muscle to releave some of the tension on the joint. Massages also help and alot and swimming helps tons for RA! Warm baths in epsoms salts also help the joints. I notice when I'm on my cycle my joints swell more and I'm pretty sure its because your body retains water during that time so it makes swelling worse. Praying for you and your findings!

I had my right knee blow up to the size of a grapefruit-right after my doctor told me I had RA. It was my first swollen joint. Then a few weeks later the left knee. Not until more than a year later did I have inflamation in my hands and feet.
Atypical presentation of Adult onset JRA.
It is weird but it does happen.
