hi i am on antibiotics for a chest infection and got a bad cold, my asthma as flared up to.

i heard somewhere i should either be careful or not take my meds while on amoxicillin antibiotics, any ideas?

i'm currently on plaquenil 400mg daily and methotrexate 25mg weekly`

Did you tell the prescriber that you were on MTX? MTX should not be taken with any penicillin type drug. You also need to be very careful taking MTX with any type of chest infection and should not take it at all if you have pneumonia. In other words call you rhuemy.

I just finished pharmacology in nursing school, and also take methotrexate, and I've never heard that it shouldn't be taken with penicillin antibiotics - do you have any resources? I'm honestly just curious because I've taken penicillin abx many times while on methotrexate...

My RA doctor and I had a long discussion about this because I get a lot of sinus infections. He will not take me off MTX while taking antibiotic  (even penicillian) because you are only on antibiotic about 10 days and you would only miss one dose of MTX.  It's still loaded in your system. If it becomes a problem he suggests we switch to another antibiotic. The problem for me is what works best so both doctors agree to go with it for 10 day periods. liver test have all been fine with this arrangement.

I think each doctor feels  differently about it so talk to your doctor.

I'm allergic to penicillian so this never came up for me. Hope you feel better soon.

You can run your meds through drug interactions dot com and see what comes up.
Penicillian and mtx interact and my doc and pharmacist agree that they should not be used together.
They give me omniceph or leviquin for sinus infections.

I usually look up everything in my drug book for interactions, but last time I got amoxicillin I was so sick that I didn't check. Interesting. I'll have to ask next time! My primary usually gives me a flouroquinolone as well (Levaquin).
