Jaw pain - RA related?

Hello Everybody!

For last 3 days I have the pain in my jaw - both sides. It is hard to eat and open the mouth wide. It hurts...

Did anybody experienced jaw pain before? Can it be releated to RA? or it is more like dentist who should look into it?

Any response will be appreciated!

I recently started having jaw pain, and since I see my rheumy tomorrow, I'm going to ask him about it. I'm not sure if it's RA-related or not. It started about 3 weeks ago with mild pain on both sides. That lasted just a few days, and then my left side pain disappeared but my right side pain started getting worse, and now it's much worse, but just on one side. I wear a full upper denture, and a lower partial. I haven't been to a dentist in about 2 1/2 years, and my dentures don't fit quite right, so it could very well be a dental problem-I really don't know, but it's starting to hurt like the dickens. I'll post again after I talk to my rheumy & see what he says. That's all I can do at this point, so good luck!

I met with my Rheumy a week ago and when he asked me my symptoms one of the questions was if I suffered TMJ (jaw pain), which I do. I am not sure if this is a symptom of RA, but I will find out more when I follow up w/ him next week after blood work tests. More to come.

Thanks for response! Today is a lot better it looks like the pain is going away slowly. I will have the appointment in next 4 weeks and if I will still have the pain I am going to ask my rheumy too. But hopefly at this time it will be gone. It scared me for a while as it was painful to eat the sandwich or whatever I was chewing. I don't wear any braces or anything.
If I will find out anything I will let you know.

Hi, when I flare my jaw hurts. I think it's definately related to RA. I don't like muesli anymore because of the chewing involved.

The rheumy in the hospital confimed it was RA related when I flared last time.

But no harm in checking out your teeth to make sure...golitho

I saw my rheumy yesterday & he said the jaw pain could definitely be from RA, but due to my dental history he suggested I see a dentist to see if that could be causing the problem. So, that's what I learned-hope it helps. It sounds like you're doing better already, and I hope you continue to improve. Good luck!

i to have had jaw pain one Rhumy said no another said yes so take your pick However i had a friend in the 80's she was old then so not as good medication she had terrible contractures and also could hardly open mouth with rhumy in jaw.But Don't worry nowdays those kind of results are very rare. But i always remembered her when i had jaw pain and was told no .

Thanks guys! Pain in the left side still persist, right side of the jaw is much better now.
On Tuesdady I will have the appointment with the dentist so I will ask him by the way to check my jaw too.
I also fight the pain in my elbows lately, they want me to get off the predniosne - another 2,5mg/day and I am not sure it is good idea right now.. ( but wuld love to stop the Pred - don't get me wrong!) I got the steroids injections 5 weeks ago in the elbows and it didn't help much, week ago I had another injections - pain still not gone completely. And now the jaw.....

I hate to complain and I do it every day now... :(((

Right before I was diagnosed with RA...on my first bad flare....I thought I had a terrible case of the flu! I hurt soooooo bad all over and went in a told my doctor that I had the worst ear infection, on the left side, that I have ever had. My doc looked in my ear and said, "it is not even red...at all!" That is when they began looking for other things and dx'd me with TMJ and RA. I am also on Plaquenil and am supposed to go off of prednisone after my appointment, February 21st! Scary!! I have been on prednisone for about 5 months now.....but I do want to go off of them! I hope you get some relief soon!

I suppose to have the dentist appointment today but was rescheduled because of bad weather conditions - we have snow storm today. So my next appointment will be March 1st...
Feel better overall, hope it will be gone soon.
