I have just started taking mtx for RA and I am finding that my joints are more swollen and I have increased pain. Is this normal?

I am 34 and have had RA diagnosed for 6 months but I have had symptoms for a couple years.

I just took my first dose of MTX last Friday. I will take my second dose of MTX tonight. I do have more swelling, but I was blaming it on the weather, and my prednisone wearing off. I will be interested in the replies you receive. Are you really tired the day after you take MTX?

Welcome to the forum, Gingerale. (I love that name!) I like the forum because everyone here is sympathetic and are good listeners. I don't think it is normal to feel worse after starting methotrexate, but everyone reacts differently to different medicine. I would call the doctor and see if you can get back in. How long have you been taking it?

I agree with De La Rosa, call your doctor and leave a message saying your more swollen, maybe they can give you
an injection of prednisone to help with that....or maybe they might increase the MTX...keep your doctor in the loop...

Hi Gingerale, Yes there have been a couple of times I have felt worse after taking my MTX the next day..either because I was in such a horrid flare, that I needed something *more* or I didn't drink enough water etc with my dose the day prior.  I didn't actually have visible swelling (I never have) but I had increased soreness and achiness.   However it diminished a few days later..almost in time for the next dose!

Welcome Gingerale! I have not had this experience but I have seen it listed as a side effect and someone I knew from another forum had more pain & swelling from MTX. Give your doctor a call and see what they say.
