Really Sore Hip!!! Help Please!

Hi All,
Sorry I haven't been around in a while but I have been reading lots of posts and keeping updated on whats going on. I often check out the ostomy site and crohns sites as well since I have those problems as well.
For the past couple of months I have had serious pain in my right hip and I went to see my doc and he injected me with cortisone in my hip joint and it felt amazing for about the first week, I was like a new woman. But sadly the pain came back with a vengence and needed to have another one only 2 weeks later. He gave me some stretching exercises to do which I have done religously in the hope it may help but gradually over the past 4 weeks since my last injection my hip is really bad again, to the point I can barely walk. Does anyone else have that problem? I am also experiencing lots of shoulder pain and can't raise my arm very high at all as it hurts too much and to top it off my thumb feels like its crunching everytime I bend it, feels like bone on bone rubbing, I am so over the pain and thought I would be pain free once I had my ileostomy done and that has improved but then to be diagnosed with RA and iritis I am really feeling like there is no hope for me anymore. I am becoming so depressed and I am on lexapro for that and been to counselling etc but it still doesn't seem to make a difference to how I'm feeling. I am also menopausal and lost my father 6 months ago, so I have had a lot to deal with. But I am angry at myself for not being stronger and just get on with it, I cry at the drop of a hat and feel like such a sook as there are many worse off than me. So will someone please kick me up the butt and snap me out of this.

I was in the same place you are abut three months ago. The injections stopped helping my hip. My ortho didin't know what esle to do, except to remove the bursa. I have Iliotibial Band Syndrome in both hips/legs, too, and that is awfully painful. I had to crawl up the stairs to my bedroom for a couple of months, because I could not walk. I went to PT to stretch out the IB and about this time, I was Dx with seronegative RA. I am taking Celebrex, Predniosone, MTX and Tramadol for pain, and doing much, much better. My RD said not to have the bursa removed. All the bursitis in my shoulders, knees, hips, etc. is RA related, she said. Since I have been on the prednisone for the flare, I am SO much better. I am tapering down on the prednisone now. Hope this helps!

Thanks for your help Vannie I do appreciate it very much. I can't face the prospect of going onto steroids again since I have been on them on and off for the best part of 23 years due to crohns disease and then my bone density is border lining osteoporosis for which I take calcuim supplements for, also have cortisone eye drops for iritis. The steroids made my moods unbearable as well and I was on such high doses before I had my colectomy and proctocolectomy that I gained 6 kilos in 3 days. It was nasty and felt like my skin was going to burst open. So I absolutely refuse steroid treatments now. Plus the pain patches had me so sedated I felt like I needed to sleep constantly so I only want to take pain relief as needed and not have it going through my system 24/7. I am just so miserable and wish all these ailments would give me a break. I honestly can't remember when I felt pain free although thankfully since my surgery my tummy is good apart from adhesions but thats another op that I will have to endure when I feel I can handle it. Sorry I don't mean to sound all doom and gloom but I just need to see a light at the end of the tunnel soon to give me some hope. Thanks again

Yes going back to see my doc this week to get some more pain relief, something that doesn't sedate me too much. Thanks for listening guys

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but are you in pain management? and seeing a pain management
doctor? that might help...as ultra sound therapy can help and are your doctor's sure the
pain is at the hip and not the lower back, sometimes hip pain can be coming from the back
so maybe ask your doctor about that possibly...

Andorable, I had really bad bursitis too in both hips a couple of years ago my rheumy who had injected them countless times sent me to a hydro therapist. She managed to stabalise my hips and strengthen the muscles with very gentle under water physio. It took a long time, maybe 3 months, but it worked. I haven't had it back. I was also despairing and crying from the pain of it all. The physio also told me to take small steps, no strides.
It may be worth looking in too. I can't believe how much its helped me. (I still go for maintenance classes, core strength etc.) Golitho

Thanks guys for your well wishes and input I really appreciate it. I'm not seeing a pain management doctor but I will look into that. Also golitho I did do hydro therapy about a year ago and was happy with the way I felt but the physio that I used to see left and I didn't go back, perhaps its time to get my butt back to see another one and start it again. I went for a walk with my daughter and grandaughter today and I was limping something terrible again, the pain is not good. You could be right too Chartreux perhaps it is coming from my back as I do also have lots of lower back pain, but in saying that the injections did help and when the doc pushes in my hip bone I go through the roof. I'd go back to a physio, they will work out if the pain is originating in your back or is bursitis or a mixture. Mine is so good at working out what is causing my latest pains and then designs exercises to help strengthen that area and I just can't believe how much its helped me. I thought I was old before my time and now I feel so young and fit again, I'm 51. I am on a bucketload of meds includng prednisone but I hope to wean myself off it eventually.
The physio has given me hope. A good physio is worth their weight in gold. (but I have heard horror stories) Mine is all under water therapy, deep warm water, its a relief just to walk into it, I can feel aching bones easing in there. An hour a week is all I do, used to do 2 sessions when I was really bad, I wouldn't give it up for anything.
