Aids to Hold Eating Utensils and Pens?

Hi Again,

I am having a really hard time now gripping a fork with my left hand. I am pretty much ambidextrous, except that I hold a fork and also write left handed. It's gotten to the point that I have to hold a spoon or fork in a fist just like a toddler. I have a very hard time gripping a pen. I can't seem to close my fingers that much anymore.

I was looking online for special forks and spoons and holders for pens and pencils. Are there brands you'd recommend?

Right now I use the automatic jar opener by Hamilton Beach.
when I was a teacher there was a child who couldn't grip well. I bought large size pencils for him.

How about buying easy grip utensils? I've seen large handle styles and odd shaped ones.

What you describe is one of the most frustrating symptoms of RA. It's what prompted me to get on this darn prednisone. I could not grip my toothbrush properly to brush my teeth. Can't wash a glass without fearing you'll drop it. Writing looks like a child's scrawl. Long ago when my hands were really bad I had to wrap them in ace bandages along with the wrist in order to grip my fork. Not sure what that did but I remember being able to eat.

I have the same problem with RA. I'm like a little kid. When we go out to eat my husband has to cut my food into tiny pieces so I can manage to use silverware or I try to order finger food to avoid strange looks. I'm very self conscious of things. opening doors with keys is another problem I have. Hair brushes , tooth brushes, scissors sometimes just hurt so bad. Weird thing is that I am still crochet as long as I use a large hook.

I was hoping for suggestions of good brands of fork and spoon covers, but found a special spoon that not only has a wider cushioned handle, but it also tilted to the left. It's on Amazon. There's also a wide pen, but it looks rather dorky.
