Hi all,

    My name is Donna. I have a multitude of problems and usually post in Lupus forum. I also have severe Rhuematoid Arthritis. I have a problem with a symptom but don't know what is causing it. I have from time to time get this rash and swelling all over my body. Tonight it is on my hands arms, elbows, feet, and back. My right hand is so swollen and painful and itchy I'm digging myself raw. I understand the swelling but why the bumps, and itching. Does anyone else have this problem? My docs don't know what it is and now I no longer have ins so can't go see him. A long time ago I went to see a Rhuemy that said I had Phyrotic arthritis (Don't know if I spelt that right). Could this be what is going on? The problem don't last that long a couple hours and then it is all gone. I was just hopeing some one can give me some advice. Thank you for reading this. Hi Donna! Welcome to the Arthritis Forum... I've not heard of Phyrotic Arthritis, but I have Psoriatic Arthritis... You usually get it if you have Psoriasis. Do you have Psoriasis? Psoriasis can itch and cause scaly patches on your body... Check out this website, it has all the different types of arthritis listed, it may be able to shed some light on what you are experiencing... There are also a lot of nurses who post here, Erin and Flopsie are very good diagnotisician's :) Hope you find your answers soon, please let us know how you are doing! Here's the link:

Hey Donna,

what stuff you're going through!  whew!  when did this rash first start?  do you think that maybe you're exposed to something causing an allergy effect before this starts...like a food or fabric?  i'm going to check my books on your meds and see what dermatological effects they may cause.

i've heard simialr stories like this in the past.

it's very stressful not having insurance.  what about a University clinic?  like a teaching hospital.  i pay out of pocket for my rheummy and PCP.  i'm going broke...and thus, really don't follow my appts as supposed to.  but what can ya do?  gotta eat right??!! eyes

i would definitely keep in contact with the rheummy even if it's by phone...rashes are nothing to fool with and especially ones with swelling.

do you run fevers with this rash?

Thanks for the replies.No I don't have psoriasis or fevers. I thought it could be an allergic reaction to one of my meds but I haven't take any in a month or so. This time it lasted 2 days sad ! alternating from my left to right sides. It's gone now but my arms and ankles are still sore from all the itching. I've told my rhuemy about this before but he just gave my some creams to use that don't work. Now I'm leaning towards stress and nerves or Lupus. With my house hold I'm always stressed out. I started taking benadryl-maybe that will help. Well Thank you all for the replies and advice. I'll keep ya'll updated if I find out what it is. God Bless ya'll

good call. it does sound to me a Lupus symptom. i was thinking that maybe it could be one of those dangerous rashes from a med, but since you've stayed away from them...that answers my question! the benedryl is a good idea to have on hand.
is it sensitive to sunlight or fluorescent lites??
if it starts to blister, spread, peel or you run a fever or have difficulty breathing /swallowing get to the ER.
rashes are weird...i don't like them! they can be nothing or they can be SERIOUS...so be careful, and take care. it sounds like you know your body pretty well.

If you ever happen to get a chance to see a dermatologist, that wouldn't be a bad idea. They make good diagnosticians sometimes!

Hi Donna - intense non-localized itching can be a symptom of liver disfunction (my aunt has this, due to a liver disease).  Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Hmmm, interesting.. I just started getting a strange itching and rash from my elbow to my pinky on one arm am dealing with a lot of itching elsewhere as well (it's slightly swollen as well.)  I have psoriatic arthritis (which I bet your doctor said, and I think you can have it w/o having severe or noticable psorisis) I also have autoimmune liver problems (which I guess could be aggrivated by antibiotics I'm currently on causing the new rashes/itching.)

I tried rubbing some hydrocortizone (1% over the counter) on my arm and then covered it with Calamine/Caladryl lotion last night...it sure helped the itching and let me sleep. You might want to give it a try.

do the itchy itchy shake! it's the latest craze!!!
that's a good point with the liver. my mother's friend has HEP C and i did her injections for her..she had crazy itching and pruritis, red scaly flaky horror. i think she had that hydrocortisone cream too.
i feel blessed. the only rash i get is from my mohair sweater. LOL. oh, percocet and morphine causes the itches too for me.

I agree with erin percocet causes the itchies 4 me 2 & if u can seeing a derm might be quite beneficial. My mother & daughter also use hydrocortisone cream, My daughter has eczema and my mother is allergic 2 the sun,she breaks out in horrible red scaly splotches anywhere she forgets 2 use sunscreen it itches so bad she scratches without noticing even in her sleep.

Wow...she's THAT sun sensitive? Does she have Lupus or something? Or on meds that do that to her when she's exposed to sunlight? Oh dear, be careful!

I do believe its from one of the many meds shes on.As long as she remembers her sunscreen she's usually good.

Hi every one,

  Thank you all so much for the advice and the laughs. I still have the rash only now it goes every where, but only lasts a few hours at a time. I plan on going to my doctor and getting a bunch of blood tests done. When I can I will also seek the advice of a dermatologist. Have to wait for ins. In the mean time I'm kinda getting used to it. If it gets really bad or other symptoms appear I will go to ER. You all are great and funny too tongue . Thanks again.        Donna

Hey Ducky -  is Temovate cream over the counter? what exactly is it?

Donna, have you noticed any association to getting the rash and something else going on? LIke taking an Rx or a vitamin? Certain stresses or foods?

I find, that when I am around my mother....I tend to break out in a rash....

I got my temovate cream from the doctor, but he said I could get it over the counter... I have yet to see it in the stores though.. I believe it is a steroid based cream... All I know is I put it around my hair line (where the majority of my psoriasis is) and within 2 days, it's gone...

Hey Donna, Phyrotic Athritis is caused by Psoriasis, alot of times it flares up due to stressful situations. My son has Phyrotic Arthritis and Junior Rheumatory Arhtritis, he is also taking Plaquenil and Naproxen. But he is using Triamcinolone Acetonide Cream for his Psoriasis, and it is helping his rash go away. They say when he gets rid of the Psoriasis it with help with the Phyrotic Arthritis. And they want to try him on a new med called Methatrixate (I think I spelled that right), But some thing is going on with his liver, so they can't start him on that till they know whats going on.

Hi Donna,

When I was taking my plaquenil, I had a few red bumps on my back (a bit of a rash) and now that I am off of it...wholly cow!! it is all over and itchy and last night my husband put some cream on it and it made it worse since at that point it was starting to hurt.

Since you have Lupus, it could be caused by that? or with these pesty autoimmunes it is so hard to say eyes   I'm sorry you are miserable sad

It looks like Ducky gave some good suggestions for cream and I Just wanted to add you came to the right place.

I've got to remember to search for that Temovate cream. the last thing I was rx'd was clobesol ? and it's just 'eh' on the rash riddance.

Hhhmm... Temovate has clobetasol in it.. here is a link.. I wonder if it's the same stuff you've used?  I know it's been wonderful for me... Let me know if you use it..
