Toe injury

He went in for x-rays as he couldn't move it at all - doc said "isn't broken, will be better in a week." A week! The bruising wasn't horrible, but his toe was black and blue for a long time. To this day (over 2 months later), he still cannot bend it w/o pain, and just recently has he been able to walk on it semi-normally.

Now we see that right below the joint, there is good-sized lump. We don't know if it is swelling, calcium deposits, fluid, or who knows what.  Is this something that will go away or does he need to get it checked out? He hates to spend the money if "it's nothing" but would hate to go and hear, "if you had only come in earlier....." as well.

What do you think? Any thoughts, ideas, or experience with something like that?

ALSO - I suggested maybe he needs a cortizone shot if it is swelling, he reminded me that the last 2 shots he had (in a finger joint) made his finger swell up 3 times the size (couldn't even bend it) for almost a month before it got better and isn't sure he wants that to happen to his toe right before vacation. Does that kind of swelling sound normal?

Thanks! It seems pretty hard. He actually had to go to urgent care when it happened. He is being cheap and doesn't want to spend $25 to see PCP who then has to refer him to a specialist for another $25.....I told him weeks after it happened, "go back in! they said a week and you still can't walk!" Now he sees this lump and is concerned.

I don't know if he knows if the lump has been there that long or not....it was bruised and swollen at first and too painful to touch (I don't know how it was NOT broken - that thing he dropped was insanely heavy! Though, he was wearing boots....)

I'll tell him to call and just request a direct referral to an orthopedist - if they'll do that.

 Hey mama!  Ya know, for some reason last nite I was thinking about what happenned to your hubby's toe! LOL  Of all the things to pop into my brain! My honey hurt his foot, a stress fracture from running, so that's why feet were on my mind.

So Flopsie, my reply was up to par eh?  Good. You need to be watching me, I don't want to get rusty you know.  being out of the nursing game for a while...yikes a YEAR!  But the good thing is I do re-read a lot of text and current nursing magazines as to not feel too out of touch.

Camama, I'm sorry your husband is not treating you well right now.  On top of everything else you have going on, I'm sure it's the last thing you need from him.  Not that this is an excuse to treat a spouse poorly, but when my husband gets worried about me, he tends to take it out on me.  He'll blow up about every little thing.  IN any case, I'm sure things will work out for both of you--a cooling off period is in order.  And the vacation may be just the thing you both need!

With respect to the referral, I can usually call my PCP and request a referral by phone.  They've never insisted I come in first.  Perhaps that's up to the individual doctor, though, and the reason for the referral.  Insurance is such a game!
