Why does your dad think that the Indocin will make him worse? It will help with the inflammation and the pain. The other med commonly used to treat an acute attack is naproxen, a NSAID. Depending on the degree of joint inflammation and location, sometimes prednisone is given or steroids are injected into the joint. If your father is unwilling to take any meds, rest assured that usually an attack is self limiting, lasting only 3-10 days.
In the meantime, keeping his weight off the foot, elevating when he sites, and cool pack might help. I hope that the doctor gave him a list of foods that should be avoided also. Here's some really good info on gout:
