was wanting to know if you have taken plaquenil before

My doctor put me on plaquenil a month ago after no relief . I just wanted to c if it helped also they are going to put me on restasis . I hope it works because if not I have to have a punctal occlusion to put punctal plugs in and i dont want that.

Hi

People with lupus often take Plaquenil, and secondary Sjogren's and milder sorts Sjogren's type symptoms are very common especially if we have certain antibodies. It is an important disease modifying drug with numerous very useful but not so obvious side effects such as lowering cholesterol and slightly thinning the blood. However it takes several months for its full obvious effect and I have read that it takes even longer for Sjogren's, more like a couple of years. ( Dr Daniel Wallace). So it can't be relied on to help dry eyes either fast or sure and I think other meds and topicals are needed to cope as quickly as possible with eyes.

Presumably you already see an ophthalmologist- a base line eye exam is advised when starting Plaquenil and regular tests afterwards as advised by your doctors to make quite sure that it isn't affecting the eyes. This is a very rare side effect indeed at recommended doses.

I just got a script for plaquenil yesterday and will start it next week, I've had a total of three sets of eye plugs put in, if they numb your eye's it's not so bad, but have someone else drive you to this appointment, as my first set of plugs blurred my vision and if that should happen to you then a driver would be best in getting you home, also it can be painful if your eye's are very dry..my first set of plug was done in February 2009 3 month plugs, 2nd set of plugs were place in June, those ones were supposed to have lasted 1 to 11/2 years and only lasted 5 months so on Tesday this past week, I had another set of plugs put in and he numb my eye's and that help...you'll be sore for a couple of days...hope this info helps, get them if your doc says you need them

I have received about 10 tear duct plugs in the last 14 months. I finally got one called the Smart Plug! IT is awesome. They go into the tear duct and you cannot see them. I immediately started tearing... I also use Restasis but it doesn't really help. The eye plugs are the best for me.

Are you taking Plaquenil for joint issues or for your eyes?
