I don't know about the med for children but it's worked very well for me. I had some sedation and neck pain (weird huh?) in the beginning but after that it really helped me to calm down. And very very little has ever helped me to calm down unless it knocked me out cold.
There are some other threads on the site talking about Abilify. I'll see if I can't figure out what some of them are.

FWIW - Abilify took me from suicidal to manic in three days. This was at a dosage of 7.5 mg. per day. Extremely powerful for me and scary.

Hey Stranger,
Haven't heard from you in awhile. I restarted my Abilify last night. I've been hesitant to take the Klonopin because I'm afraid the two together would knock me out, but tonight I had to. Rolling panic attacks really stink. Like waves, one after another. I don't know if it's from the drug or if I'm building it up in my head and expecting problems so thats whats happening.
Anyway, glad to hear from you again.

Well, I just posted on the a/p post,  "Have been there - keep looking up" and as you'll see by my post ... I wasn't sure which direction to look this morning.  mad   Ha !!!

Then, as I really am to pooped to post, I'm thinking of another title that I can really appreciate, "flipping out over nothing".

Now having "been there" also ... and thinking back at many sorted events or days ... I'd much rather be "flipping out over Nothing",  then to REALLY have something to flip out over. 

I'm sure we've all had those days too...  When there really was something to flip out over.

But I really have had those days also, where it was over "nothing" and all we can do is look back at those kind, someday and thank God when it's over, that it really was "nothing".

Hey ... If you guys pray, would ya's pray for my MIL.   I'm sorry to say, she's dying of cancer and I feel really bad for my husband.  I don't think he ever thought he'd lose his mom, because her mom lived to be 103.

Prayers coming right up hon. I'm so sorry about your mom-in-law. Got to be terrible for your husband especially.
You take care and try to rest tonight, I know thats not your specialty, but it never hurts to try. I don't sleep much either.
Yes, waking up in the morning to realize it was nothing is a darn good feeling, cause it sure could have been something. I was doing pretty badly earlier but took half a klonie and am feeling MUCH MUCH better now. I think I'm going to make this after all.

You sure were Corey-jon. BTW, lithium was the very first drug they ever put me on. YUCK. I refused any meds for over a decade after that. Just spent 10+ years crashing and soaring. The Abilify is horrible at first but I know once I become accustomed to it. everything will even out and I won't have that fog that lithium left me in.

hugsssssss and ty for welcome back:)  ya had lithium poisoning ONCE:(  too high a dose i guess. i only get it when the BAD thoughts come. i like abilify pretty good tho. how are YOU doing hon???  i didnt back check and read the posts. too many overwhelmed me:(  i get lost in crowds. scare me sad

Odd, the reference about crowds. I had an interesting event in walmart this weekend. Got stuck in a crowd and flipped out bigtime. It's odd how quick an immovable group of people move when the crazy lady gets hysterical.. You would have thought I had plague.lol I'm hoping the abilify helps to put an end to that as well. You've been away from hw for quite awhile. Everything going ok for you?

i dont just have bp to deal with . i have scopophia and anthropophobia so peep freak me out totally. i dont go anywhere alone except to work. but my doc wont let me hide behind glasses or hats anymore sad and no more shopping a 3 a.m.  im getting to used to that. he has me looking at pics of myself that my brother takes for my mom. i have to look at me and discuss what i see. so i been away from hw.  didnt think anyone gave a crap. ty for noticing me gone and welcoming me back sad . i usually just get lost

Yep I'm a 3 am shopper too. Missed all my kids games this year (she's a cheerleader) and never got to see her fly. One of the reasons I'm back on meds. My kids are growing up and I'm not going to be there to see it. Just couldn't make myself go into that crowded auditorium with all those people, all those LOUD people.
It's been getting worse. I don't have any friends left irl. Hoping for a miracle with the abilify.
Healingwell is what's kept me going. It's pretty much my only link with the outside world.

I know how you feel. And I'm a control freak. Hate feeling like a puppet to this disease. It's just taken over my life completely in the last year. Thats why I'm fighting so hard now. I hate the meds too, feel like they're controlling me as well, or did. Had someone on another site say something very enlightening. He told me that the disease may wrench control from me but the drugs were allowing me to take the reins back again. Not an exact quote by any means, but I think I captured his meaning. Very simple idea and he hit it spot on. Really changed my way of thinking about the medications. Funny, how i could be so biased about the drugs that I would have never thought of it that way. You see, I was dx 15+ years ago but have only been medicated about a year maybe year and a half of that. I think its way past time. This bp stuff is ruining my life.

lizandtony  I have suffered w/ Bipolar since the age of 15, I am now 33.  The road has been long and bumpy!!  I strongly urge you to be careful with your young daughter.  Read everything you can find on the medications and treatments for the various conditions that she is being treated for.  Be careful of the PDOCS try and find a good GP that is knowledgeable about both bipolar and OCD aswell as the ADHD ( I believe I remember from your post that your daughter had that aswell).  I was lucky to find a GP who has a wife who suffers from BP and he is very up on all the old and knew drugs on the market as well as conventional and non-conventional beliefs behind the causes of BP.  I could sit and talk to him for hours, he is so intelligent yet down to earth so different from the Pshyc's I'd seen as a teen and young adult and sworn off.  He even addresses forums on mental health for other physicians.  It would also be great for you and your husband to join a support group for parents, and if you have other children in the home see if there is a group in your area for them too, sometimes parents forget that this things is hard on the siblings too.  I'm sure it was hard on my sister watching me being hospitalized for weeks at the time, and I often wonder what she must have thought the first time I had a suicide attempt ( she was only 11 ). I hate to hear of a child so young having to take so much medicine, the side effects can be so hard.  I pray for her and for you.

I've also been bipolar since I was 11 or 12. I am now 45 and have a painful past. My moods were so unpredictable,as were my delusional thoughts. There is a wake of destruction behind me. In 2004 I was hospitalized for two weeks after it was discovered how close to suicide I was. Pain and embarassment...this was my life.

Please continue too see a psych Dr. Find one who will answer  your questions. I think it's nice that horselady found a GP who has a wife who is bipolar, and is very knowledgable. I want to warn you...

Most GP's don't have a clue, this is why you need a specialist. As a Nurse I know what I'm talking about. I have been on the right meds for me for two years now. Amazing difference! Be patient, it takes a while to find the right drugs and dose for each individual. Talk to the Doctor about anti-seizure meds to control mood. I take lamictal, fluoxitine,and abilify, and the occasional xanax for occasional anxiety. This is what works for me anyway. I don't suffer side effects. I am stable for almost 2 years now. It takes a while to find the right mix, especially with a child. DON"T GIVE UP!!!!

Hi,all

so how long does this stuff take to work? Its been 3 weeks every morning i take

5mg abilify,300mg wellbutrin,30mg prozac,30mg adderall, then at bed time 10mg valium

then of course xanax as needed.i thought i was going to start feeling good?

I'm on 20 mg Abilify, 450 wellbutrin and 2mgs Ativan as needed.  I think with all the meds it took a couple of months to really notice that the Abilify had fully kicked in.  You're on a very low dose.  It could be that your pdoc plans to increase it slowly as you become more accustomed to it, although some people do well on very small doses.  I wouldn't give up on it yet, it may just take a little more time.

This is in response to arsen-1978 regarding the weird side-effect he got with Abilify.  This is called Parkinsonian Syndrome.  The same thing happened to me; however there is a medication called Cogentin that will remove this side effect.  If Abilify is a good med for you otherwise, you may want to talk to you doc about it.  Good luck.

hi i take 200 milli lamictal too.... and i start my abilify tomorrow.. 5 miligrams.. i hope it works

(I don't need it very often) The combo works great for me. Abilify keeps me from getting paranoid delusions. I have been on these meds for 1 1/2 yaers and I'm finally stable. This thread is really old -- the last post was January 2008. Why not start a new Topic of your own and tell us a little bit about yourself. We're glad to have you. We know you're taking lamictal and abilify. I hope that works out for you. What else have you tried? What's your story?

oh ok.. i am kelly.. i had a drug addiction for 10 years.. methamphetamine.. one day only ONE DAY. like a miracle.. mother gave me one of her Lamictals.. and 200 millys.. i dropped onto the floor and cried my eyes out.. thanking her over and over and over.. " mamma " , i said.... this one pill is magic.. i swear.. the chemistry in people is so strang... LOL being the most dramatic woman in the world.. i know its nuts but 10 years of meth almost killed me... my teeth were rotting out... went and got them fixed .. i can smile again and i feel good... however.. the lamictal OH my gosh.. nightmares big time... but. they finally stopped.. GET THIS ITS SO BIZZARE.. i know but... i cry more.. the callousness went away.. after all the years i was on meth.... i have been meth free since the very first day i took that lamictal... i went to the doctor and percribed lamictol.... THANK GOD I WAS IN THE MILITARY. got full coverage... because that lamictal is very very expensive..
