antipsychotics as mood stabilizeds

DOes anyone use antipschotics to manage there bipolar.  Obvioulsy you need high doses and it isn't for slep.  I used to take seroquel and zyprexa combo, now I take haldol.  It works for me much better than most mood stabilizers - although zyprexa is considered a mood stabilizer it high doses.  Does anyone use antipsychotics for mood control?

I take 600 mgs of seroquel. I was taking 400 but recently upped to 600. I also take depakote. I guess that would be the mood stabilizer. hmm I guess the seroquel is for the mania and phycosis, not quite sure.

There are a lot of people in this forum that use APs for mood stabilizers, so give it a little more time and you might hear from them. I was on Geodon for about 5 months last year, but had to stop because of side effects. Abilify is another one that I was on for a while but had to stop due to side effects as well. It is not unusual for a doc to put people on one or more APs, so you are not alone.

I have been on lithium with no succes and became distressed and overdosed on lithium - so I cannot take that. I have also been on depokote but developed liver preoblems due to the liver metabolism of the drug. For two years I did, for me, it kept the worst ends of it under control. At either end I am pyschotic to the point of if ending in an attempt to escape. The other world is very scary, you may want to die now, but there no man can live. So I took zyprexa at 80-90 and seroquel (my first month was 2600), then stabilized at 2000. Now I take haldol, but I think we will add another first generation antipsychotic soon.

Antipsychotics for controling bipolar. The first thing is :

Use zyprexa- you will need to take trough out the day and at least 40mg.
Second- riperdal dose need will cause prolactin problems in many women, otherwise second choise of atypicals
Seroquel- dose around 2600/day
Abilify (may induce maina, or make take mania to a "different" level, causes mania in unipolar depressives who after being off fir two days return to normal, for me I came I could tell the difference between common objcts likr the difference of a stop light and a stop sign. Never combine abilify with zyprexe because of a large relationship between the drug combo and psychosis.


First generation are harder to guess with. Haldol is the most popular, with doses ranging from 2-20 per dose needed for bipolar.I take a low dose to avoid parkins-like probllems and reverse tremors, only 6mg.

I am on zoloft and risperdal...never had a problem with either, besides it being harder to maintain my weight.

I think it's important to remember that drugs affect people very differently.
