I have an appt with my psych on Wed and I am thinking about
asking him to cut my depakote back to 500mg instead of 1000mg. I am currently on 1000mg depakote, 100mg topamax, 30mg buspar and hosestly I feel like its too much. For the last week or so I have cut myself back to 500mg and I feel better already. I know you're not supposed to do that but I wanted to see how I felt. So I don't know if I should ask my doc to cut me back. Should I tell him that I have been only taking 500mg this week? I don't know if we are just supposed to do what they tell us or do we take part in the presciption. This is all so confusing

I don't think docs mind at all when you make suggestions or ask for a change. I mean afterall you're the only one who truly knows how you feel...but they do know best, or at least supposed to know best...when it comes to these meds so the worst thing that could happen is they could say no. I try to always trust the docs and do what they say when it comes to the meds. You probably shouldn't have cut back on your own...you were lucky that it didn't make you worse. I don't know how happy your doc will be when he hears you cut down on your own, but you really should tell him. *hugs*

If your doctor gives you a problem about
your wanting to change your script
b/c you're feeling like crap (after discussing all of the other possible reasons)- please find a new doctor. It is a service industry. People should not have to suffer under medical care.
Good luck and be brave!

I agree with all the others, and definitely let him know you changed your dosage already and why. It's imperative you're always honest with your doc.

My pdoc doesn't even make me wait until my next visit, I can call her for a change or adjustment if needed. I would say in my opinion the best doctor will work with you to get your magic dose.
However, I wouldn't change a thing with my dosing without calling her first.

Thank you all for your advice. I am going to talk to him
openly tomorrow and tell him how I am feeling about
the Depakote. I definitely want to cut back to 500. I guess I didn't want him to take me off the Topamax instead of the Depakote. Ever since he put me to Topamax, I have not had the urge to drink, eat, or shop as much as a used to. I actually walked into a Walgreens yesterday and bought ONLY what I needed and I havent touched alcohol in over 2 weeks. I will update you all tomorrow!

i want to ask my doctor to change my meds somehow... i'm on 1000 mg of depakote as well and i feel like it's too much sometimes. i just feel so solemn and unemotional. ugh i hate it. i'm nervous about
asking for a change, though, i am NOT an assertive person at all haha. good luck to you
