You all have been so patient while our board has been temporarily distracted by this divisive issue. On board, we've had a few voices calling for and off-topic thread, sometimes loudly and rather rudely. By email, I've had voices suggesting we just get back to the issues at hand. I tend to agree. We need to get back to talking about
bipolar. Our purpose is to talk about
bipolar in a supportive and warm environment.
Mommy2ethan is correct, we do already allow off topic threads: the word games and discussions of personal events that don't exactly fit under the bipolar topic. As several moderators from other boards have pointed out (more on that in a minute) the need to reseve bandwith is an issue. While I don't believe one thread is going to make that much of a difference I do believe it is our purpose to more or less reserve our board for bipolar topics. I don't see that Hollywood gossip or recipe exchanges have much of a place on our board. So we are not going to have "An Anything Thread" and we are not going to have off topic chatter threads in general. You have several options if that is what you are looking for: email, messaging services, the chat rooms on HealingWell, other forums.
As to the disrespecting of moderators. Some of this is my fault and I apologize for the recent flood of moderators from other boards. I asked them for their input about off topic threads, and they all came to look at the message and were (rightly) outraged about the tone of the message. Moderators in general are pretty sensitive to messages which are anything but absolutely polite. But mommy2ethan was absolutely right -- not having any connection to the moderators makes it a pretty tough pill to swallow when you're being chastised by them. Not that they were wrong, but several of them were overly harsh. So for my role in that, I apologize.
So going forward,
I would like no more messages about this on our forum. It has distracted us from bipolar topics long enough, and hijacked 3 threads at this point. I will HAPPILY discuss it with ANYONE via email. [email protected]
