Was curious how many people are on Topamax and actually lost weight.  I hear it also has a nick name of Dopamax, has anyone had any cognitive problems on the medication?

Hello Juliaa,

I was put on Topamax for Basilar migraines and lost about 30 pounds right off bat however the weight did eventually come back. I dropped the weight very fast and I must say it was exciting as I'm a big girl to start with. The tompamax did wonders for the migraines however! I was really disappointed when the weight started to come back and now I'm on Invega and it is known for weight gain so I suppose the weight issue will continue. I don't know if this helps or not...

Hi Juliaa,

I only experienced the appetite reduction for about a week. I think the weight loss benefits are actually over-hyped. They're temporary as yankeepeaches pointed out. As to feeling dopey, I did for a short time, but the effect wore off as well. I don't know how well it works as a mood-stabilizer/AD, since I take Lamictal and 3 other drugs as well. I think it does okay. :)

I forgot to mention that whenever I was first on Topamax I wasn't on any type of mood stabilizer and for awhile I had a difficult time with concentration and getting my thoughts together. I knew what I wanted to say but trying to say it was a different story...but eventually that evened out. I don't remember exactly how long that took. Over a period of a year I went from 100mg per day to 200mg per day. Now that I'm on so many other rx's however I'm back to the spacy feeling and I don't think it has anything to do with the Topamax.

Thanx for the info. I am going off of depakote and on to topamax for both mood & migraine problems. I'm am really hopeful to lose some of the weight I gained when I went on the depakote. Crossing my fingers. Doc is very willing to do anything in hopes to that dropping weight so blood pressure might drop. Thanks for the hope :)

Does help people lose weight....but in California I believe they nickname it "Stupamax". I believe because of the brain fog aspect of it. I am not real sure though.

The first time I was on Topamax I lost about 10 lbs and the next two times, pretty much nothing.  May have lost a couple of pounds since Coca Cola lasted like crap as did all carbonated beverages so stopped those.
