New member. Looking for similarities and comparing to my daughter's case. There is no textbook that's for sure.

Hi Helper.
I'm sorry I haven't responded before now. We are glad you found our forum. There is much support and understanding here.
You will have to elaborate as to what you are wanting to know before anyone can really answer you.

My daughter is bipolar I?...has depression and anxiety. Was good on meds. Recently paranoia has increased to the point that she was overwhelmed at school that it became impossible to complete the year. She had roughly 3 weeks left of 11th grade. With that said her psychiatrist won't adjust her meds unless she is under 24h care. I attempted this yesterday and it was horrific. My daughter went into an adolescent unit and I was appalled when speaking with her later that day during visiting hours. She needs therapy for paranoia and anxiety, she also needs help with the med adjustment. I feel there is no right place for her and wonder if such a service is out there. My daughter was put on this unit where everyone else was different. Suicidal, psych (delusional, violent), threat to themselves and others, runaways, alcohol & chemical dependancy, they came from broken familys, other patients still had formed scabs on their wrists. It bothered me that she was being exposed to the things that I myself would not ever expose her too. I felt that if I left her there that night, she would never be the same. When I admitted her there they had brought a young man in handcuffs, escorted by two policemen. He was very distraught. I asked the admission coord. if my daughter would be on the same unit as that young man. She replied NO. That evening that same young man sat on a couch during visiting hours. My daughter stated his room was two doors down. She also told me that interaction with other patients was not permitted and was considered a violation of the rules and would not be tolerated. There was a quiet room for violators. I am no longer optimistic that there is a bright light at the end of our tunnel.......could I be right?

HOM, my brother growing up was in many facilities. What I can share is this....not all are the same. Check out some other ones. IF your daughter needs 24/7 care in a facility, there are many out there and you need to find the one that is the right fit. Don't loose faith, it DOES get better when the right place is found for her, and her meds get the proper adjustment she needs. Additionally, if the pdoc is not helping you here as an active and supportive part of your wellness team for her....then it is time to potentially seek a new one. Having the right pdoc, who can hear your concerns as a parent, and work to help you find the right in-treatment placement for her is important. Don't get intimidated, get focused and committed. Just also keep your expectations of the "right" place realistic to the fact that it will not be a bed of roses (although it doesn't need to be as bad as you described either), and people having a hard time like this manifest differently from each other. You can't hide your D away from the darkness that this condition can bring either. But you can keep her safe, select the right environment and help her make choices to take ownership of her condition and work towards her own wellness at all times.
I know this is a hard process for all. Hang in there. It will get better for you all. LFW
