After crying every day for 6 weeks and having huge amounts of anxiety
I became desperate for relief. Though I consider myself a spiritual person;
I am in no way religious. I have struggled with the name "God," as it reminds
me of the patriarchal, judging childhood God that lived in the clouds with a
white beard. That God felt very far away and mostly a made-up human idea.

In 12 step groups we learn that we can have a Higher Power of our own understanding.
It can be called Buddha, Spirit of the Universe, Goddess, Creator...whatever...it doesn't
matter. Whatever or whoever is in charge has been called many names for many centuries
by many different cultures...hence my confusion over the 'name.'

Anyway to make a long story short...I was desperate with a non-ending anxiety-ridden
depression that just would not go away so I did something I've never done...I got down
on my knees raging with tears and asked God or Whatever your name is...Please take
away this depression and anxiety and all these worries and in a couple of days I felt peace.

I haven't cried in 4 days and my worries are gone...whatever happens happens...I just do the
best I can and let whatever his/her/it's name do the rest...'God's' pretty easy to say so I think I'll
stick with that for now. Anyway...praying worked to help my Bipolar...just wanted to share something
that might help someone else out there.

There have been a lot of posts related to religion lately. But I wanted to remind everyone about the HealingWell Forum Rule #11

God does heal people.He healed my dad of cancer. I am glad to hear of your good news. I just prayed for you, that you may continue praying to Him. :-)

I'm glad you are having some better days. Trust me I know all about the 12 step programs and their "higher power".....Personally, mine are my children. Whenever things get bad and I think about doing something stupid, I look at them and know that they don't deserve that kind of a mother. Whatever helps you, is what you should do. Good job!

How do you know what is healthy religious belief and what is hyper-religiousity (symptom of hypomania/mania)?

I used to have strong faith, but in a hypomania it went overboard. Trying to convert people. Thinking God was speaking to me and telling me to do things.

So was my faith a sham? I'm afraid to go back to my religious beliefs. I'm afraid that I'm praying to nothing.

The lady who does Beyond Blue has a new social entity thats very interesting. Something like this forum is run. Prayers and stuff available by clicking on the tab. Check this out. Sorry I did not copy the site, but feel sure if you go to Beyond Blue you will find it.

Red Lightning,

It made me feel really warm and fuzzy to read your post. Starting with sadness and concern for you turned to happiness and relief.
From your post, I did in no way feel you were trying to convert anyone to religion. So many of us need to believe in a higher power because at times we feel so powerless. It is a sad world we live in where some conversations are banned in case we offend another person.
I believe we are all entitled to our own personal beliefs and opinions, and if we feel the need to share then we should be able to do this without criticism or judgment. Having said this, I do oppose religious debate.... that is where trying to convert another to believe in what you believe comes in, and that is so different to sharing a spiritual experience. Thank you for sharing :+)
I pray you continue to have relief and peace and the strength and courage to continue what you believe in.

Its been a month since you posted this thread, Red. How are you doing? Well, I hope.

Shrub, warm fuzzies?

If only being on my knees in tears and begging the Lord to come to my aid had ever helped. I was baptized in water, born again, born of the holy spirit, prayed over, hands laid on, annointed with oil, lifted up a gazillion prayers on my own behalf.....but the struggle goes on. Only thing I can figure is that a gazillion prayers was just short of the gazillion and a half that must have been required.

Hey there Trying to Understand,

"Warm Fuzzies" = Feeling really happy inside... I guess it's just an Australian term.
I was feeling really happy for red lightening that s/he finally felt some relief. So many of us are waiting for that day to come.
I hope your day will come soon too. :+)
