I am writing for some advice on how to help my daughter who is going through a manic phase.  She is 20 and stopped her meds while off at College this spring.  She has been very agitated, angry and having issues sleeping.  She said her friends are telling her she is different and I don’t think they’ve seen her in a manic phase since she has been very stable the last few years.  She did say she would see her psychiatrist but until then I’m not sure what I can do to help her get through this with as little as damage to her ego and friends as possible.  She is a beautiful young lady and has so much potential but my concern is if she doesn’t stay on medication what will happen and how long it will take to get her stable.  She is not able to listen to anything I say without getting angry so it makes it hard to try and talk.

Any advice on things I can do would be appreciated.

I'm about to turn 25 and I can say that I have been there. I stopped my medication so many times in the past 10 years. I don't really have any advice to give you from the parenting perspective, since I have always been on the other end of it, but if she is interested in someone to talk to you are more than welcome to give her my e-mail address. I made a lot of mistakes in my 20s and I will do anything I can to help other girls with and without bipolar not make the same mistakes. Mania can be a very dangerous time, and in my case, I wasn't surrounded by friends who understood what was going on, they just thought that I was a helluva-lot more fun than usual.

I can't give any advice, but I just wanted to say I feel for you as I am going through something similar with my husband.

All I think you can do until she seeks help herself is keep a close eye on her. If it seems she is getting to the point where she could hurt herself or others you can call the police and she can be detained in a hospital for 72 hours while being medically evaluated. Then she will have a hearing and the doctors and a Judge will decide if it is safe for her to be released. Many times the release is conditional on seeking continuing help. At her age one can do things that are very impulsive, and act quickly without thinking, so for her own safety keep a close eye on her and be ready to act if you need to. It is for her own good.

Hi thank you for the replies, I really appreciate your support. 

 

I'm still waiting for a call back from her psychiatrist for an appointment and her psychologist retired but I was able to talk to him and he said she could call him and he gave me a referral so I'll try and follow up with that as well.  Since she is now an adult I'm thinking I need new psychiatrist since hers is a pedPsy and I'm having difficulties getting an appointment (5 days now).

 

If anyone knows of a good psy in Philly or South Jersey I would appreciate the referral but I wondering if I should try and get an appt. with the psychologist and see how they like to work with. 

 

I don't feel she is at a dangerous phase at this time mostly anger and aggitation at the world and depression but we're keeping a close eye on her. I'm glad she is home for the summer and hope to help get her back to her wonderful self before the fall semester starts.
