My boyfriend isn't just mean and crazy

I've been in a relationship with my boyfriend since December of 2009. It's been an up hill battle. I didn't realized until after I found out i was pregnant with our son that he had a serious problem. His mood swings became worse and worse. I found out several times that he had been seeing other women which he would deny but then later would say he was sorry and that he was just texting them and that he has a problem and needs help. He blows up several times a week about nothing. He's very possessive I'm not supposed to hang out with my friends or talk to men (he often accuses me of cheating, that's because he does). He started out drinking alcohol (beer just a couple a day) early into our relationship. Now he drinks to get drunk everyday. I used to just sit in my room and cry feeling very alone. All that I had was our children (my children from a previous marriage and his children from a previous marriage) to talk to. It has been extremely difficult to deal with the ups and downs.

After deciding that I wasn't just crazy (thats what he always says to me) I decided to research different mental disorders and finally came to the conclusion he is bipolar. I have begged him to go to the doctor ( Which he would say he would go but then wouldn't) and I have taken our son and left him but i go back now i often just ignore him but nothing has worked yet.

Most recently I found him at that bar (his usual hiding spot) texting a woman he found on craigslist (she's a stripper/******). I called her and spoke to her myself. He apparently was trying to hire her. Anyhow, he once again said that he knows he has a problem and asked if I could make him an appointment to get help. So of course I did and he cancelled the appointment the first time but had rescheduled it for yesterday and OMG he went to it. Of course when he got home he was in one of his moods, so I didn't say a word to him I just did my own thang then went to bed. So this morning he was back to being his nice person (which is seldom these days). He discussed a little bit of his meeting. He said the guy couldn't even give him a test to see if he really was bipolar that he needed to go see a psy doc and referred him to one. Geez! Is what I said.

So now I don't know if he will ever go back or go to anyone else. I feel like I just want to shoot myself (only in the foot though because no man is worth killing myself over) because I feel like this cycle will never end. There is no quick recovery for what he has.

I just feel bad for him and my family, we are all suffering because of this. I feel for all he families out there that deal with this illness.

I know you say don't waste my time but sometimes he really acts like he cares. So does he care? Is he capable of making the necessary changes in order to have a normal life? I know these questions cannot really be answered by him or anyone for that matter. I feel like I have no choices either deal with it or leave.
