Wife diagnosed bipolar, angry and stressed

my question is my wife has been diagnosed bipolar other wise not specified,when she gets angry or stressed she likes to consume alcohol to a great extent.she has always drank but not to the point of intoxication,she has also not paid any of our bills but i can't seem to find where the money goes can anyone tell me if this is bipolar or is it something else??

I don't think any of us are really qualified to tell you if it is for sure a bipolar issue. It could be, but everyone who is bipolar reacts differently. I'd go and speak with her doctor, if shes on a new medication it could be causing her to do things she usually wouldn't(since you said she liked to drink but not usually to this extent). I hope this helps some.

she is on lamictal,prozac,and buspar,she was diagnosed with bp in march 3 days later she went on a 2 week drinking binge,she ended it by cutting herself and spending a week in a mental hospital,she drinks more when she is angry,or stressed her dr recommended aa but she says she don't need it cause she don't have a alcohol problem any ideas???

Sounds alot like borderline personality disorder. I have BPD and Bipolar II and that sounds alot like me. Especially the cutting and going on drinking bindges. Also when my doc put me on Lamictal it made me worse. I would get in touch with her doc and see about adjusting the meds or switching. It is hard to find the right combination and can get very frustrating waiting for them to work. I would ask about BPD and see if she could be suffering from that as well. Is she in counseling?

she refuses counseling says she is scared to go cause of her past she was molested as a child by her step father.she drinks when she is angry she sometimes has memory loss after an episode of drinking,she also lies for really no reason at all

Self-medication with alcohol is not unusual among bipolars. It causes significant problem with medication! Lamictal and alcohol CANNOT be combined!

Remind her that in counseling she does not have to share that past. I have similar past - not so severe - and I've given up with telling a therapist since it doesn't affect me now. Not all therapy is about digging up the past. It's about learning skills to move forward.

It is going to be rough until her medications get sorted out. It can take a year. Or more.

she just wants the meds she don't want counseling or anything else,the dr told her to go to aa but she tells everyone the dr said if she thinks she needs it go,her oldest daughter provides alcohol for her and will not admit her mom is sick my wife will not have her daughter go to dr with her so the dr can tell her not to drink,any suggestions?

I agree with Lynn on that it sounds a lot like bpd, which I'm sorry to say there aren't really medications for, patients have to work through bpd and it takes a long time and a lot of dedication to working through problems. Tortoise is right, I know from experience that Lamictal and alcohol are not on friendly terms, it makes things ten times worse than they are. If her daughter is bringing her the alcohol I think its time either you or her daughter put their foot down on bringing alcohol into the house and talk to her doctor. Good luck.

there is no talking to her or the daughter about it they both say drinking is not a problem.i hope our seperation/divorce will make her see there is a problem,thanks for all the input never thought i would have to do this but she has forced me to do it the kids and i don't need all of this at this time i think she puts our children in danger so i have to act i hope she will see she has issues and get the help you need

Maybe you should have her hospitalized for her own good. She will appreciate it in the end.

i cannot have her commited she has not harmed herself since march that is when she was commited for a week i am at end of my rope no other options are avaliable to me i do love her,but not her selfdestructive ways
