the doctor put me on Valproic Acid. for bipolar. does any one know about this drug or had a bad experience on it?

Hi, Caren,

Valproic acid is the same thing as Depakote, I think. It's really a very good medication with few side effects, except one for some people:

it can make your hair fall out; I lost a good bit while on it, but recovered most of it when switched to Lamictal (small dosage) and hypothyroid medication.

I hope it works well for you because it has so few side effects.

Hi carenpolar i tryed sodium valporate but it made me really sick as did lithium and tegratol sorry bout spelling it didnt work for me i lost an amazing amount of weight within a week of taking it and i felt constantly ill..im on lamotrigine now which seems fine but everyone is different as long as the nausea isnt a prob for you you should be fine good luck

It did not control my mood and it caused stomach pain consistent with ulcers, although diagnosing cause of the stomach pain was not pursued, so I cannot say for certain. The pain went away after being off of it for a few weeks.

Hi Carenpolar. Ive been on 1000 mgs Valproic Acid (EPILIM) which is an excellent mood stabilizer together with 100 mgs Seroquel which controls my mania and helps me get a good nights sleep. Ive been on this combination for a year now and doing great. Good luck! Charmy

I ended having a rash all over my body. so I stopped takind Valproic acid.
