My Granddaughter is showing signs

Hi, I hope you all are doing well. My granddaughter has been showing signs for a few months. Her Mom my daughter is bi polar. She called the doctor yesterday and told her some things that are going on. My granddaughter[ Chelsy ] hasn't had a easy life . She turned 12 today. My daughter just wanted to talk to the doctor about getting Chelsy into some counseling or something like that to start with to make sure, but since Nikki is bi polar they wanted to get crisis involved and start meds right away, Maybe even the hosiptal. She is not in any serious danger to herself now just having feelings, and personality changes. But she is turning into a teenager and moving from the city to the country in a few weeks. Changing school is really hard on her, she is in middle school in the city and will be going back to elementary k-8. She will be losing lots of friends so she has a right to be emotional right now. Does anyone have any suggestions how we should handle this, if it isn't already to late since the doctor is involved. I know she needs to be checked out but I think after she adjusts to her new life things will get better. Should we wait for a month or two? thanks Mary

I don't know much about childhood bipolar but hope your daughter seeks help now. 

 

There are lots of great websites you might find helpful.  Do a Google search on childhood bipolar or variations of the phrase and see what you can find.

 

My cousin's son was diagnosed at 15 or 16 when he was so depressed he wouldn't get out of bed.  Don't know what happened as I'm not close to them--heard about it from my mind.

When my grandson was having trouble, we started off with seeing a therapist. In turn, she referred us to a psychiatrist. There were tests that had to be done to rule-out certain possibilities such as lead poisoning, brain tumor, etc. At that point, the psychiatrist was not sure if he was schizophrenic or bipolar. After all the elimination and being a client for a couple years, he had a psychotic episode and this led to him being diagnosed with childhood bipolar disorder.
