Hi, I'm mainly from the ulcerative colitis board, but have a question regarding bipolar disorder.  Years ago I was diagnosed bipolar, but didn't have insurance long enough to get on any meds in regards to this disease.  I currently am seeing another doc. but haven't really been diagnosed with bipolar yet, he's giving me meds for anxiety at the present time to get it under control.  My question is about certain symptoms.  I know bipolar deals with depression and manic episodes.  Mine seem to occur frequently though.  Each day I deal with depression, but there are a few times each day where I'm all of a sudden in a greater than normal mood, but only for about 15 to 20 minutes..then it's back to being depressed.  I have alot of energy all of a sudden, like I'm ready to 'conquer the world'.  I'd almost rather be despressed all the time, rather than deal with the roller coaster.  From my understanding and research, the manic episodes don't occur that frequently though.  Could someone with bipolar disorder have many 'highs' each day?  They don't last too long, but it's very noticable.  Thanks in advance for any responses.

In answer to your question about having many cycles in a day; yes, and someone who cycles that often is called Ultra Ultra Rapid Cycling Bipolar. It's more common in women (due to hormonal fluctuations) and children, but can happen to anyone. I don't do that often but have gone through periods in my life where it happend. Sure threw everyone around me off, they didn't know from moment to moment how I was going to react.

Hi Nathan,

I am a rapid cycler. That means every month or so I cycle very fast daily. Up and down, up and down. I am looking for a new med to decrease this. I was on remeron for awhile and didn't cycle at all. The only problem was the side effect of weight gain. Now I am thinking about going back on because I think I rather gain weight than cycle so often. Cycling is very difficult and hard to come out of. Let me know if I can help with any questions. Good Luck!! Nathan how often do you take Benadryl? Its been mentioned to try that for sleep even by the doctor. Does it really work?

Thanks for the replies.  I take benadryl almost every night, unless I'm exhausted and can get away without it.  It works very well as far as making you tired...takes only 45 min. or so to take affect.  Sometimes I only need 1 pill (half a dose) for it to work.  I'll be sure to ask my doctor about remeron next time I see him...thanks again for the information.

hi nathan, i also rapid cycle many many times a day, varying from day to day the only difference being that i fluctuate from being normal to UP UP UP many times a day and then depression and anxiety only a few times a day. I take abilify currently and it seems to keep me a little more stable so far.
