Here is another reason I need to quit.

Last night, I went out into the garage for a smoke, then dumped the ashtray in the garbage can. A big rubber one, mind you. Later, my wife asked, what stinks? I replied it was probably the dog. We then noticed the smoke. Yep, I lit the big rubber trash can on fire. It had melted down to a big pile of rubber, and stank! Filled the whole garage with thick, stinky smoke. My wife's car now stinks, the garage now stinks, the lawn chairs stink, my coveralls stink, my boots stink, even my golf bag stinks.

Anyone know how to get burnt rubber stinky out of stuff? Febreeze, vinegar, glade plug ins, hairspray, deep woods off, scented candles, air freshener, left the door open all night and today, and pinesol all failed.

that REALLY stinks.  what a smelly situation.  ok enough puns.

odor is caused my molecules.  basic chemistry (i think i flunked).  what you need to do is to get rid of the molecules that are causing the stink.  problem is that some substances (like rubber) have molecules that are attracted to other molecules (such as walls, cielings, gold bags, etc).  that means cleaning EVERYTHING including walls, cieling, light fixxtures, etc.   painting is another option.

i'm not up to it.  there are commercial companies (sorry i can't remember the names and neither can my wife) that do this sort of cleaning.  an insurance company should be able to link you up with one.   come to think of it, this may well be covered under your homeowners policy.

my wife burned a steak about 25 yrs ago in our condo.  our homeowners policy took care of everything for us.  and our rates did not go up.

my dr told me to quit smoking because of my copd.  i changed drs.

Clean everything with a normal cloth and whatever normal cleaning agent you use, then rinse it all. Then squeeze a bunch of lemons into a squirt bottle with a tiny bit of apple vinegar and some water, and spray it on everything.

Everything will smell lovely after that!

As for quitting...I can't really help on that. My Dad stopped smoking just like that when my big sister was born.
I stopped just like that a couple of years ago cos I had enough health problems to be contending with.

Both cases there was a really good reason. I think you need something to stop for.
However, with BP it's so much more difficult!
When you're even slightly manic, you need something to do... all of the time.
There are times now when I wish I smoked, not cos I want a cigarette (the smell makes me feel sick now, which is lucky cos I won't start again!), but cos I'm twitchy, nervous, angry and need SOMETHING to do with my hands.

Oh Cap! Sorry, but I have to laugh! I'm a smoker too -- bad me! So far the damage done is mainly just burn marks on my sofa -- your tale is certainly a cautionary one! :) I think you've had all the cleaning advice so far, so I'm just adding my giggling!

I am a smoker and I feel your pain... Have you tried lighting a box of matches that seems to burn off alot of stinks

I was going to suggest the same thing as Djonma.  I JUST recently got a friend of mine to quit smoking and I honored him for it by cleaning his FILTHY truck.  I used Bleach/water....I would NOT always recommend that.  BUT, I would DEFINATELY use Vinegar w/warm water and the lemons.....Oh, Plus I used dish soap w/warm water first.....It still smells good in there....I also did the floor.  Vinegar and the lemons are the way to go.  And then on top of that I would leave car, garage etc open all day.  And I would leave the vehicle in the sun to help also.  Good luck and quit smoking!....I smoked for almost 30 years....A "friend" of mine....lol...had my daughter smack me everytime I lit up.....I grew tired and I had prayed alot also.  I just quit.  I stayed away from it also for a long time, now if I am near it it just pisses me off.  LOL   (nobody likes a quitter!)  Anyway I have been smoke-free for 1 year and 9 1/2  days~!  Thank God~

PS......

   A GREAT way to do your interior is just use BABY OIL....you would think that it would be horrible, but it is not.  Apply with towel/rag and then wipe excess off with  another towel/rag and it will shines beautifully and it will keep interior vinyl/leather/"PLEATHER" conditioned so it won't crack....been using it for years, WAAAAAy cheaper than specialty products...!

congratulations on stopping smoking! over 9 yrs! what an accomplishment. i have tried several times and tried everything from patches to hypnosis.

when i got out of the hospital after my laminectomy, i had been three weeks without a cigarette. i thought, "this is it. i'm smoke free!" WRONG. i don't remember what trigered me, but i started again.

i'm having another back surgerry when we get back to tx to have some "hardware removed." maybe i'll be able to quit after that. i hope so. smoking and copd are not supposed to mix.

 Warren, no...I have quit for 12 months and 9 1/2 days....not 9 years!  Don't age me baby....I aint gettin' any younger here....sloooooow down.... yeah

sorry, 2tall. i know what you mean about aging. i'm 60 and feel every yr of it - sometimes more! my grandkids and greatgrandkids age me faster. lol

that's still a great accomplishment!  and you still deserve congratulations.

I believe that 2tall has the right answer, the vinegar, lemon and a bit of water sounds like the correct way to go. After all, the women usually know what to do about this smell or that. Vinegar and lemon together have a very pleasant smell, especially the lemon –use the oil from the peel also. I’m certainly sure that your entire garage will most probably have the distinguishable, if not delightful, smell of a burnt big rubber garbage can salad.
Sorry but I couldn’t resist offering that garbage can salad smell. I know for sure that I’ve burned up one rubber garbage can, and it melted in my kitchen. Yuck! Man, I’ve got to quit smoking myself one of the days. Hehehehe….lmao.
