Hurray! I fianally found a forum where I'm not the oldest!!!!!!!!
I remember cars with fins... the bigger the cooler.
I remember my mother insisting that we have a PINK Chrysler (I'm a female so I thought that was wonderful!)
I remember going on our vacation each year in the car, listening to the AM station all the way, until the static started. Then we would sing songs, because there was no such thing as tape/cd players.
I remember drive-in hamburger stands that weren't called "Sonic", and kids would hang out there.
I remember when the guys in school that wore white t-shirts with a pack of cigs in the sleeve were called "hoods".
I remember when there were "smoking areas" in public high schools. (You were supposed to have a note from mom saying you were allowed to...but nobody ever checked!)
I remember pep-rallies in the un-airconditioned gym, and everyone feeling like they were going to melt!!
I remember when I was in elementary school (the same school my granddaughter goes to now as a matter of fact) when there was no such thing as air conditioning (in Texas). Dresses with petticoats were the fashion at the time... talk about HOT.... and the only way to cool off was to stand in front of the box fan for a few minutes before class started.
I remember the day JFK was shot... I was at recess, and the announcement came over the loud speaker, so we heard it outside... I remember going from running, playing and laughing, to crying hysterically. I remember that JFK had been to my city just the day before, and we had seen it on the news that night. I remember watching the little black and white TV in horror while Lee Harvey Oswald was shot on TV.
I remember watching the first space flight (and all subsequent ones) on a portable TV at school that was brought into the classroom.
I remember when everyone wanted a bomb shelter more than a trip to Europe.
I remember when we had "civil defense drills" in addition to fire drills, where we had to hide under our desks.
I remember when the PTA sold rations for your "bomb shelter" as a fund raiser...we still have a few.
I remember when it was safe to play outside all day in the summer, and I remember when it wasn't anymore.
I remember when a little boy was who was in my class was abducted by a bad man, and nobody said what happened to him but it was "something bad"... he was held back a year, but in those days child predators didn't actually murder their victims.
I remember when TV stations ran commercials about "fallout".
I remember when the Beatles were on Ed Sullivan.
I remember a lot more than this but this post is getting ridiculously long already....
