What I see a lot of, is people saying they have any number of things. I tend to think it is attention seeking behavior. I hear people all the time say they have "migraines." They will whine about what to take for the headache...naproxen or ibuprofen? Well, folks, don't touch either one. If you REALLY had migraines and you were REALLY diagnosed, you'd have REAL medication for them!!!! I always ask them, "when did your aura start?" and they have no idea what I am talking about. They don't have "migraines" at all. I don't broadcast my own cluster migraines or the neurological symptoms that accompany them...unfortunately my body does the broadcasting for me when I trip, fall and lose my eyesight in my left eye. So, I stay home. I don't care for that kind of attention.
But you do know whom I am talking about. We all know them, the people who will try to "one up" your problem like pain and illness and whining about such was a competition. I have one person like that right now who is on a constant round of joint pain so bad she can "hardly move" but she sure can move fast when she wants to, like if the phone rings. I have no sympathy.
As for people saying they are bipolar...I have heard that too. I think it is an excuse for bad behavior. I am sure it is easier to blame being "bipolar" than blame that fact that the person is thoughtless, rude, obnoxious and out of control. I mean, if you have a true bipolar diagnosis, I'd reckon you try to hide this and be as much in control, in hypercontrol of yourself so that others can't tell. I know I do.
I agree with you 100%, I am truly ashamed of my mental illness. Only a handful of close freinds and my parents know i have it.
