My husband became unusually religious in the months leading up to his total collapse and diagnosis. He seemed to think that God was speaking to him in a special way and that he was to "do" something......The pastor unfortunately became part of the problem and was giving him a weird form of counseling that I wouldn't recommend to anyone. IT was called "theophostic." Without this preacher, my husband might could have gotten help months earlier and the major fallout from his breakdown, etc. might could have been avoided.
I told that pastor that my husband was losing his mind, and he didn't believe me. He thought that Joe was dealing with problems from childhood memories or demons. This weird counseling contributed to his downfall. He trusted this preacher and not his wife whoknew him far better.
I will not go back to that church, and maybe not to any church. Pastors are not doctors and should be quick to recommend professionsal help. THis guy ended up being the one to take him to the psych ward the first time....He had no business continuing a relationship with my husband when his life was becoming more and more out of control. Anyone could have seen that he was deteriorating mentally...."Generational curse" is what one person called it- how about genetics!!
Funny now that Joe is stable, his "religion" is back to a normal level. I think that believing God is giving you a "special purpose" is itself on the edge of mental illness. We should all do the best that we can each day and help as many people as we can each day. That's why I joined this forum- to help other people. I don't believe that God told me to do this- it is just ocmmon sense to use negative experiences for the betterment of others. Live and learn. Good luck all! APG
