what do other bipolars think about how bipolar or any other mental illness  potrayed on tv.myself i am sick to death of movies soaps dramas anything on tv showing people with mental illnessness.example on english soaps there have been a few who have had mental illness.on police dramas etc.we are always either killing someone or kidnapping someone.its everytime.how is this helping people like us.if i saw all these programs id stay away from people liike us to.we are not crazy maniacs wanting to kill everybody.another point id like to make.if we see things like i have or hear voices or talk to ourselves <although we all do talk to ourselves>were crazy.your a preist or relgoius your not.

I completely agree with you about the portrayal of BP and mental illness on TV. It is always so extreme. My hubbie and I actually joke about it now that whenever we are watching something where someone has gone 'crazy' to the extreme you can bet that in the next few minutes they are going to be going through their medicine cabinet and the Bipolar word is mentioned without fail. Shows like Law and Order and CSI are particularly guilty in my view.

In fact it was partly a show on TV that led my hubbie down the path of getting diagnosed 2.5 years ago. We had seen something which although extreme put a light on for us with my hubbie's behaviour!!

It does give totally the wrong impression of mental illness though and you are right gives the majority of people a very bad image of people who suffer from this type of thing. Not everyone is a serial killer.

I'm a bit at a loss, because I don't have tv. I can't think of a movie recently -- Someone help me out. but I do agree that the stigma of BP is that if you tell someone, they back up two steps because they expect you to go nuts on them. I remember Girl, Interrupted didn't help that much, despite how much I liked it.

I think the most damage done recently was ironically Oprah... but then we had a thread on that already...
