ANOTHER new member

I am joining to gain some connection with, voice from, and insight into this world of bipolar disorder.

I was dx as having an acute manic episode in spring 2001 while in grad school. I was successful on depakote (but gained 30l bs.) and in 2004, I stopped taking it per docs recommendation. For the past 4 years I have felt great, lost the weight naturally, etc. This December I had a mixed episode over xmas and spent another 10 days in the hospital. I have experienced mania but not a full depression. I think? here we go again. I am back on depakote, which works, but I don't like because of the food cravings and weight gain. that is my only med. also, my husband and I want to have kids and have been trying. that has all halted, and my new psych wants me to change meds this summer so that I can be supported through pregnancy. thinking about lithium, not sure. I am worried about the actual med change and the effect it will have on me, my physical and mental system.

I am wondering if anyone has experienced med change and pregnancy? Also, I am curious if anyone has experienced this disorder through mainly mania vs. depression?

I am genuinely interested in gaining insight from others through this resource, and offering what little experience I have as well. Thanks.

Welcome to Healing Well and to our forum in particular. Glad you found us. I too have been primarily depressed, but I did stay on my meds during pregancy. I was taking Lamictal and Prozac. Lamictal is a mood stabilizer too. My baby is fine. One thing that is crucial is lots of folic acid, so take prenatal vitamins even before you're trying so you have plenty in your system.
