My 17yr daughter has been diagnosed w/ BP since she was 13. She is experiencing extreme anxiety; rapid heart rate hpyerventilating, stomach upset and school phobia.  Been through lots of test to rule out physical issues.  She had been tutored at home last year and this year she was back in school  for a few months but now we can not get her in school--hasn't been in since 5/21.  Before then maybe 2-3x a wk.  She has an IEP.  There are a lot of issues but I feel the combo of anxiety and BP is taking a huge tool on her.  She is in denial about much of this and lies rather then deal with the illness / issues.

We added a beneze for her anxiety, she takes when needed.  Regular meds are  Trileptal (600mgs) and Seroquel (200mgs).  We removed her from antitriptaline because she and the pdoc thought it might have been contributing to the heart paps.  She still has them so I feel it's anxiety. 

Are there any recommendations to help with extreme anxiety?  She sees a therapist every other week and her pdoc as needed.

Hi Sue,

I think if she hasn't seen the pdoc recently, a visit is in order. The anti-anxiety drug should probably be something she's taking on a regular basis, not just as needed, since her need sounds consistent. Are you willing to homeschool her? How about some sort of private school with a small population? (I'm not sure where her anxieties are based).

I am sorry your daughter and you are dealing with this.   I understand high anxiety as I recently recovered from a terrible bout, for which I was hospitalized this spring.  It took five different meds before my anxiety was brought under control.  Zyprexa finally did it for me but there are alot of side effects.

Your daughter is lucky to have a caring mother looking out for her.

I've been talking to her t-doc today and he is seeing her tonight, he said he is going to call her p-doc and talk to her about changing her meds this afternoon.  We did see the p-doc a few weeks ago for the anxiety.  Her t-doc said that she is now in a prolonged manic state with panic attacks as well. 

We had to hospitalize her a few years ago when she had a bad manic state and I hope we never have to go through that again but we are so worried about her mental health and how it is having such a heavy impact on her life.  She is such a great kid and it breaks my heart to see her so sick and most people don't understand that her behavior is a result of bp and anxiety. 

The school has been great and very flexible but I feel we're running out of options with trying to keep her in the game.  She will not meet some of the state requirements for graduation and will most likely need to go to summer school if we can get her in.  She is a junior in a small school district.

I'll ask the t-doc to ask her p-doc about how often we need to have her on the antianxiety medication.  Georgie Girl, sorry to hear that you were hospitalized but glad to hear that you're doing better. I hope the same for my little girl.  Were you in a phosp or general hosp?

I was in a psychiatric hospital.  I asked my p-doc if anxiety was a normal part of BP and he said it was - and that it's the most difficult kind of anxiety to treat.  Thankfully, mine is under control.  It was pure hell for several weeks.  I feel for your daughter, and you.  You are a good mom. ''

Thanks for joining us on the bipolar board and welcome to HealingWell. What a story. I'm sorry to hear you lost your house. How lucky that your anxiety is balanced now and you're doing well. I look forward to hearing more of your insight on the board.
