Does surgery affect you?

I had my gallbladder out 10 days ago. Since then, I've been having disturbing nightmares, weepiness (not really feeling sad, just crying easily), anxiety (no attacks, just general mild anxiety). I've heard there's a condition called post-surgical depression & anxiety, caused possibly by the anesthesia used. I'm thinking if anesthesia could cause depression, it could certainly make my bipolar get off balance, right? None of my symptoms are severe or affecting how I function, for the most part. Should I call my pdoc anyway? Maybe I just need a slight med adjustment?

Prior to this surgery, I've been very stable (on Saphris and Zoloft) for over a year now. I sure don't want to get back to those bad days. I feel so normal and happy (but not manic) now. I'm afraid of messing that up.

Hello, chrisnsteph1022, yes, surgery, particularly major surgery, does leave one with fatigue, perhaps tears, and causes one to sleep more
readily (while the body is recovering). Major surgery may take up
to one year for full recuperation, although I think most people are
fully recovered within weeks or months from general surgery of less
significant invasion of the body. Fortifying oneself with high quality
vitamins and minerals may hasten recovery time.

As a suggestion, I would track my moods for several days and see
if you note any improvement. If so, you are recovering nicely. If not, then perhaps you might wish to contact your psychiatric physician for his suggestions.

Take care of yourself; that's most important.

have had magor surgery and yes it took a long time to adjust. take care of you. sending healing compassion your way. jamie

Yes, surgery can affect you in all different ways. I've had around 15-Surgeries. Just this year 2-surgeries, Loop ileostomy, and shoulder surgery. In September another surgery to make ileostomy permanent. A year ago my colon tore thru my vaginal wall and my colon and bladder fell out of me.

I know being ill with things, pain then surgery is a lot for a person's body to go thru. But I would recommend at least notifying you Doctor so they are aware in case you need to talk with them or have medication changes.

I ended up calling my doctor today. I lost it yesterday and was so enraged and being mean to everyone. I felt so out of control. That's not like me at all. I knew something had to give. So my doc temporarily increased my meds and I go back in two weeks. Let's hope that does the trick.
