I saw the title of your post and was going to mention a diet that is helping lots of people with mental illness. But then when I read the post I realized it would be for your wife, so you can only suggest it to her. Anyway, there is a book called Breaking the Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall, and in it there is a whole chapter on how the diet is very helpful, even absolutely curative, for mental illness. I am trying to get my brother to go on it, who is bipolar. I myself am on it for a bowel disorder, as there is a whole chapter in the book on that, too. It's just about
cured my bowel disorder in just 18 mos, which I have had for over 20 yrs, and nothing else has helped it. Another year, and it will be cured, I'm sure. So I know it works. It's just harder to get someone else on it. It's also a lot of work, but it makes a lot of sense and works! I'm living proof.
Hang in there, I know how hard it is to care about someone with bipolar. As hard as it is, I just try to remember in my darkest moments, that I have to be grateful I don't have such a horrible illness. But still absolutely take care of myself, b/c they need me healthy. Also, b/c I don't want their illness to take out two lives, it's bad enough it's taking out theirs. God bless-
