Has anyone ever felt like they may have been given a wrong diagnosis?

I know that we dont want this to be a true diagnosis, but I have not had a manic episode in years and I am wondering if maybe I am not bipolar but just depressed.

I have asked my doctor and he has said that he thinks he is right, but I had my last manic ep when I changed med.

Has anyone else ever had this experience or known someone to have this experience? I just do not want to be on meds that I do not need to be on.

bipolar is incurable. the reason you have not had a manic episode is most likely because you are one of the blessed ones who have your medication work for you. In that it seems you are lucky to have such effective relief from symptoms, I'd probably urge you to count your blessings on that score. I've noticed over the years a lot of people going off the meds, thinking they are okay and then finding out they are not- and when they recommence their meds, they do not work as effectively. I'm not trying to scare you. It would be wrong of me not to be honest about what I have noticed. No one wants to be taking medication they don't need and it is a very valid question to ask. I hope I have put your mind at rest. Others may offer different opinions and it is up to you what feels right to you, in your gut. It is your life and it is for you to live it the way that makes most sense to you. Hugs xo

Hi MissJD,

Bipolar includes mania & depression. Depression does not have mania. If the symptoms of manic is not too severe, it is considered a hypomanic episode.
However, I know that certain trauma can bring on an mania episode as well but it does not mean someone is Bipolar. It depends on the other symptoms you have as well.

If you are not certain about your doctors dx, maybe you can get a second opinion about this just to be sure.

Thank you living well, my doctor says he is positive that bipolar is the right diagnosis. I was wondering if anyone else felt that way. I would never go off my meds unless I was 1 billion percent sure that I didnt need them.

U/A Thank you for the input. I am not doubting my doctor he is the best around. I was only wondering.

I hope and pray that people find that just perfect med for them.

For me getting the diagnosis of Bipolar was like a light getting switched on after all these years, it was like "oh, wow, this is it, this explains a lot"

I fought with my doctor too over the diagnosis. I did this cause my family and friends didn't agree, I hid so much for so long really well. Not to mention suffered. Now that they know, they don't understand LOL. Now that it's out in the open I've realised I'm not doing as well as I thought I was and others are trying to understand and help where they can ...
A lot like addictions we have to accept that we have a mental illness so that we can work on it.
You don't want to do what I do, going on and off meds cause of our feelings, i found it makes it harder on all accounts. Check in with the doctor.
