I have been taking lithium 900mg/day since 1990, successfully without any episodes and no side affects at all. Now, I am getting hand tremors. I am wondering if I dare try and change my medication and if the hand tremors can be permanent and after how long after the onset..... or is it too late.

Welcome to the forum :-)!

Maybe a change in dosage or meds is needed. You have been on the same meds and dosage for quote sometime. I would suggest you let you doctor know about the hand tremors and talk to them about a change in meds or dosage.

I really don't want to give up the lithium. It has served me for so many years and no side effects until now. The tremors are really not that bad except after I exert myself. Then, I can hardly put a fork to my mouth or hold a glass of water. Otherwise it's imperceptible. I just want to know if it can, at any point, be irreversible like akathesia. After 13 years of being misdiagnosed and finally having my life back on lithium I really don't want to go back to experimenting even with the correct diagnosis. To tell the truth I really don't know what to do.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I just wanted to say good luck! I've never heard that tremors from lithium could become permanent, but I am really not sure. I just started lithium and got balanced after being on other meds that were hit and miss. I understand why you don't want to mess around with different meds! I have no side affects either so far, tho my doc did warm me about the tremor. I hope everything works out for you and you get some answers.
