I'm SMI and of course I have the Bipolar diagnosis. Does anyone know about the term SMI?

Hi, I was deemed SMI in April 2012. I am also Bipolar. Was just curious if anyone here has any idea what that is? If not I can try to explain. The SMI part means Seriously Mentally Ill though.

just a label some idiot has given you. smi is not a diagnosis. you have bi-polar, that's your diagnosis. and you are NOT smi because you have bi-polar. i hate that people who degrade people with bi-polar as being smi. well they should learn a bit about bi-polar before they Expletive do this.

Welcome to the Bipolar forum!

There are people with mental illnesses but the diagnosis would be Bipolar, depression, schizophrenia, etc. I don't see SMI as a diagnosis. Each has different stages which can be serious or not so serious and different treatment options as well.

I am curious as to who gave you this diagnosis? Was it your doc? Did whoever say why?
