I have been on lithium for 22 years (age 35 to 57) with great success. However, my last few blood tests have high calcium and other levels that are off. In 2 weeks I will see an ears, throat nose specialist, referred by my endrocronologist to discuss probable surgery on my parathyroid gland. No one yet has mentioned what to do about continued use of lithium. I see a GP for my bipolar and prefer not to get psychiatrists involved again - too many appointments, co pays etc. I do not take any other meds, except lithium. what would I switch to??

Welcome to the forum :-)!

Did your GP recommend the Lithium? I would suggest you ask the doctor that recommend it about what you should do - whether to discontinue use, gradually wean off, etc. They would be able to advise you on the best option since they would know your background and how you're been doing on this meds.

There are other meds you can use. However, all meds work different for everyone. Therefore, you have have to try different ones in order to know which one works best for you. Please talk to your doctors about this.

I hope the appointments with the ENT will go well.

lamictal has been excellent for me. it is slow to start but works nicely in the background, it is a foundation type of feeling that is bolstered by other meds. works very well in conjunction with other meds. it's s/e are less severe than most, except for the johnsons rash. which is rare. lamictal, for me really helps with the mania and agitation. regards and healing thoughts.
