eyes  hello, i'm a newcomer to this site. i've been reading some of the post on here the past few weeks.well, i'm having some problems with my bi-polar.i've been taking prozac and busbar together for a year now.and in the begining it worked but lately i've started a new job and well i am starting to see alot of my old behavior coming back.i guess what i'm asking is if anybody out there can help me with any new meds. that might work for me at this point.i've gained alot of weight while taking this meds.and i'm not liking it at all.i have read some of you have had the same stuff going on with prozac.hope that someone can point me in the right direction with my problem.

Yes, I've seen a good few comments about weight gain with Prozac, and had a little myself when on it. Have to say though that I came off Prozac for other reasons (helped to some degree but didn't feel like I'd got back to my normal self -- rather flat all the time) not weight gain (which, as long as it wasn't too excessive, I'd have put up with for the sake of getting help with more serious things).

I think that the main problem with us advising you on meds is that, especially with bipolar, there's no one-pill-fits-all formula: different meds work differently with different people. This is something that you can only really sort out with your doc, preferably psychiatrist who, along with prescribing meds, can also help you with strategies for keeping the bipolar in check. The great thing is that you've spotted the signs early: this is invaluable, and you should really take advantage of your good insights into your behavioural changes by alerting your doc and booking yourself an appointment asap.

thanks,for the reply to my problem.went to the docs. today and told him what i was feeling.he adjusted my meds. and we'll wait to see what will help.if that won't work then i'll try something else.

*Really* glad you did this. I have all my fingers crossed for you that the adjustments give you relief. I know it's slow-going, but all of this is progress sometimes, but we're here cheering you on. Do you want to talk about your new job? Hope it's a goody for you! Changes like this can often trigger bipolar, so don't worry about that: you've done all the right things.

hello Rosie, thanks for reading my post and giving me some good advise on my problem with my meds.yes my new job is a huge stress for me right now.i've been trying to work steady for a year now.i didn't work for a very long time and i'm trying to do to much but i have 3 kids and a new house that need paying for every month. so no rest for the werey.i'm trying to do alot and it's taking it's toll on me right now.my bipolar is in over drive .but i can't let myself go down hill .i have to stay in today.not tomorrow.some days are easier than others.i'm glad that i found this site and hope to keep coming back to found new friends .glad you are all here to help so many. god bless you all.

Hi Newcomer,

I'm so sorry -- I wondered about the job -- can be a pretty "effective" (!) trigger for bp. Knowing that is power, though, and something that you can get your psych to help you with -- hopeful the meds adjustment will start to help soon too!!! Have you and your psych discussed any strategies for helping you deal with this situation apart from the meds? I know sometimes job changes or restarting work are unavoidable -- and it's good -- really good -- that you've got as far as you have with this (big congratulations), but you also need extra support at this time. Have you done any reading on how to cope in such situations (things known to trigger bp)? If not, it might be worth it. The best book I've read with practical advice on living with bp is Miklowitz's Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide -- lots of things that are dealt with, work just one of them. Something like this might help you to gain a better, more objective, understanding of what's going on at these times, and ideas on how to lessen the burden on you.

hi rosie,just wanted to let you know that i have talked to doc. and he has asked to me to talk with someone about coping tools.he thinkes that with the meds. and this i will learnto deal with things alot better. i will look for the book you have suggeted and work toward feeling better.thanks so much rosie.

This is great! Do you know who you'll be talking to? -- Any recommendations from your doc? I hope the book helps you. -- I found it really practical and light on the "hokey" that some self-help books go in for! Do let us know how you go -- supporting you all the way -- these are *really* positive steps!!
